The Food Guide Pyramid? Now that I've decided It's time to put my diet into plan, I need help with getting it started. Just have a question I need answered (Btw I'm a 14 year old male, 6'0 tall and 280 lbs... you can see why I'm getting my shit together) Basing my diet of the FGP, and a Nutrition log I have, I discovered that I need 2,650 calories a day to maintain weight, but I'm going to cut it by 300 calories, and stick with a daily workout routine, to lose about 2-3 lbs a week. I'm just wondering, (and this might seem pretty simple) but on the food guide pyramid, it lists the groups, recommended servings, and then some options. For instace, for Milk,Yogurt and Cheese it says 2-3 servings a day, then it says: -1 cup milk/yogurt. -2 oz. cheese. Does this mean that 1 cup of milk is 1 serving? Or that 1 cup of milk is all I need for that group daily? Actually, I need 3,500 calories a day to maintain weight, but I'm going to take it to 2,600

Do you think that colleges need to have better food options available for the students they serve? I think that colleges need to have better food options available for their students in three ways. One was is to have a variety of options and using the food pyramid as a guide. By having variety, you have more grains available along with a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh dairy and poultry options and limit the use of fats, oils, and sweets. Another way is not having the food be a buffet style (like the Golden Corral for example) and instead a student can only has to go in line only once and tell a cafeteria worker what they would like to eat because if a student eats way too many calories in a day and they are unable to burn off the calories, they will gain weight. Finally, universities need to ask students what kind of options they would like to see available at the school so that the college cooks for what is in the students interest.

How do I know how much food to feed my 8 month old kitty? I have two amazing Siamese kittens, that are 8 months old... the woman I bought them from didn't provide papers, and as I am new to the pet game, I completely forgot to ask. Anywho, I have a boy and a girl, who are likely (but not undoubtably) siblings... My boy kitten is athletic, healthy, slim and active. My girl kitten is a little more skiddish, lazy, and shy. The boy is usually more agressive around the food, however the girl has started to get quite a potbelly. I was told by a friend that this happens to a lot of female cats after they are spayed, however she has been spayed for 3 months already. How do I know how much I should feed them? I can't find any kind of calorie guide or anything to give me an idea if I am giving them too much food each day. Any suggestions out there? Or knowledge of websites or books that I can reference???

I just discovered (on my vacation) how delicious peanut butter is on a bagel. Is it ok to have this daily? I follow the Canada Food Guide and according to that, it is okay. I run 1.5 miles (2.4 km) every other day and have a physical summer job. I also follow a calorie counter (The Daily Plate) and everything seems to be alright there (Carbs, Calories). The only problem is protein, with my daily protein scoring at 137% Again, would it be alright to carry this "habit" on back home? I am 16 years old and I am (apparently) getting the recommended amount of protein for my age. If two teaspoons of peanut butter daily is "unmoderated," could somebody please tell me? Thanks so much..... I am eating a balanced diet. This seemed like a "healthier" dessert that I could include towards my servings.
What could be causing my weight gain? I just don't understand this. I eat a 1500-1600 calorie diet and only 33 grams of fat per day. I eat on the high end of the food pyramid guide for the fruits and vegetables, but I eat on the low end for the meat, grain, and dairy groups. I exercise at least 60 minutes 5 days a week and yet, I have gained 20 pounds in 2 months! I am not pregnant- not even a possibility of that, so what the heck is causing this?

How can I stop eating so much fast food and eat healthier stuff? I'm only about 10 pounds overweight, but being at a healthy weight doesn't necessarily make you a health person. I eat fast food almost every day. I have 5,342 half-assed excuses for this. "I can't cook." "Healthy food is gross." "I'll eat healthier when I'm older." "I know how many calories are in it." But all of that sounds so stupid and I want to change it. I tried looking at the food guide pyramid for ideas. But who can afford to buy all that stuff? Or eat "six small meals a day"? I'm in school all day, I can't exactly sit around eating in class. So do you have any ideas for how one could eat healthier food without endless planning and calculating and spending money and cooking?

Interval training on an elliptical; Am I doing it right? I use an ellipitcal machine to lose weight. Before doing 45 minutes on an elliptical would give me moderate results losing weight gradually. My routing consists of: @ 8 minutes of above moderate speed, maybe 85 to 90 rpm, switch to above 100 to 110 rpm for 2 minutes straight (going full pace). Then, my rpm would drop to about 70 to 80 rpm until the 18 minute mark. Then for another 2 minutes, I would switch and go full pace, about 100 to 110 rpm. I would repeat it again at the 28 minute mark. At 38 minutes, while at 70 to 80 rpm, I would switch to full pace for 4 minutes. That would end at 42 minutes. Then until 45 minutes I would go back to 70 to 80 rpm. It actually worked and I could drop like 10 to 15 pounds in maybe a few months; like 1 or 2 and a bit. I stopped going in Sept 2009 because of school. When the semester was over, I had gained almost 10 pounds so I went back to my routine to lose weight. What had happened was that my routine was not effective anymore. But the only thing wrong about my routine, or interval training was that I cut down on eating. And it seemed to work, but I've been told that I have to eat 3 meals a day. I was stubborn. Now, after the winter 2010 semester, I'm back to my routine at the gym, adding almost another 10 pounds, and the original routine still did not kick back in and work. I have now increased my workouts to 1 hour. At 8, 18, and 28 minute marks, I would do my 2 minutes of full pace high energy interval. At the 38 minute mark, I would do a 4 minute high pace interval at 100 to 110 rpm. At 48, and 58 minutes, I would do my 2 minute high pace interval at 100 to 110 rpm. I get a good sweat. My tshirt is soaked. I added wearing a sweater under my tshirt and my sweat soaks through the sweater and soaks my tshirt. I even started eating 3 meals a day because I finally listened to someone who gave me the same advice from before but now I have learned it keeps your metabolism up which helps lose weight. So, it's been about almost 2 weeks of going to the gym 3 to 4 times a week and eating regulary, I've dropped 2 pounds, but it was probably from before I started eating regulary when I had been exercising for almost 2 months. The progress is really slow, and if it were before I went to school, I would have at least lost 5 to 7 pounds already. But with my new eating schedule, I've been maintaining my weight, not gaining or not losing. Before Sept 2009, my lowest was 131 pounds. After the Sept semester I was at 139 pounds. Almost at the end of the winter semester, which during that semester I added a few sessions at the gym maybe a few times a month, I was still at 140 pounds. When the semester ended and I started working out regularly, I went up, the highest at 149.8 pounds and that was only a few weeks before I weight myself at 139 pounds. I am only 5'3 and I now weigh and have maintained the weight for about a week or so at 147 pounds. Is my interval training wrong? I know I have to watch my calorie intake, and I try my best, but I don't know much about calories and all the canadian health food guide stuff. If anyone can give me some advice to lose weight faster, I would greatly appreciate it. If I start weight training, and adding it to my routine, I'm pretty sure I would gain more weight because that's what happened before. Sometimes I add 10 minutes of abs workout or 10 minutes of punching the heavy bag. I hope that all and I haven't forgot anything to say. I know this is long, and I thank you for taking the time for reading it and I would greatly appreciate it if you can give some input. Thanks. sorry i forgot to add, I'm a 31 male.
Calorie Calculator Nutrition Guides? What is the best FREE resource for calculating daily calorie intake online? I don't want to sign-up for a service but I would like to be able to get nutritional value info for popular restaurants as well as generic foods and have it tallied for me...
Calorie Obsessed, help!? Hi everyone, I'm having a little trouble with being obsessed with calorie counting and I wanted to hear your thoughts on it. And it's a long read! So if you read it, please tell me your thoughts/what I should do. If you don't want to read, just scroll to the bottom and help me out with the last question ^_^! Thanks! When I was 'lil, I was pretty chubby, (around.. 7 years old or so). I live in an area where looks are EVERYTHING, even relatives would critique my appearance! And even when I was 7!!!! I thought that was harsh, but I wanted to get a better body. So when I was 11 years old, I learned about calorie-counting.. etc etc, in my Pre-Bio class, and I started to do it. Which means that I've been counting calories since 6th grade! A LOT of people would say this is unhealthy, because I need a nutrition surplus in order to grow properly. But that's just what I did and I did it very precisely. (Only going over 110% of the nutritional amounts I needed (Protein, Essential Fats, Carbs, Minerals, that stuff). Anyway, so since then I've maintained 8% body fat, and I have been ridiculously/insanely/infinitely obsessed about keeping my body fat percentage the same. For example, I've gone to calorie-counting sites, and I've used my kitchen scale so many times that I can just LOOK at food, and estimate its nutritional value. This might seem like a useful skill, but it's taking over my life now. When I go out to eat, I'll look at the menu and spend 10 minutes dissecting each item's caloric/fat/protein/cholesterol/carb/etc, value. But in the end I decide on a salad, or something. In the event that I DO pick.. a steak or something, I'll spend so much time, pushing away all of the oil, extra sauce, trimming away fat down to the meat, and only eating half of the food. I asked my doctor about this, and he said I'm just health conscious. I asked my friends and family about this and they just also said I'm health conscious. But I KNOW it's something more, since I'm so obsessive about it. And I know I'm not anorexic or bulimic, because I've never forced myself to throw up, I'm not under the essential body fat percentage, and I don't see myself as fat, just "on the brink of becoming fat." If you know what I mean. I do cardio, lifting, and I have a preplanned routine that I set up a month ago, which will guide my eating till December. (Is that bad? I haven't had candy, drinks other than water, milk, and protein, nor dessert for years.) I've been using supplements (vitamins and "good" supplements, not steroids) and protein, since I was 13, and I'm pretty sure I've been in a caloric-deficit or maintenance (same as burned, so I don't lose or gain weight) for .. 5 years straight now, only going over maybe 3-4 days in total. I had my checkup yesterday, and I'm healthy in all aspects: stable blood sugar level, lower blood pressure, very low LDL cholesterol. My doctor even told me that whatever I'm doing is fine for my body, since my diet will only make me lose water, fat, or trace amounts of lean body mass. I'm just so afraid that I'll lose my sleekness that I HAVE to watch what I eat. I looked up stuff describing my problem, and I only found "self consciousness, anxiety.. etc" Is that the problem? I know I'm anxious and self-conscious but that really can't be what's causing this could it? The reason why I randomly decided to ask this today, was because my friend asked me what kind of chocolate I liked, and I said, I didn't know. (Since I haven't tasted chocolate [not even protein flavor :(] for years.) It's really taking over my life now, and since I've never told anyone about this I don't know what's wrong. As an added question.. Is there really an "end" to dieting? My goal when I was 11 was to have a set of rock-hard abs. But then after I got to that body fat %, I had to KEEP dieting, and KEEP watching what I was eating in order for it to stay that way. Thanks again!! Wow! Thanks for the quick replies. ilikemondays and onehundredpercent, I think you girls are right about that. To your reply: I'm OCD about eating the exact amount of calories: 1850 a day, depending on my current weight ~ +- 10 I rarely think about food, because I'm not hungry, or I already know what I'm going to eat. (Every 2 hours, I'd have x amount of y.) I don't really weigh myself to see if I've gained, since ultimately I'm gonna get bigger (Lifting). Yes! It's really interfering with my life! I thought it was all fine since I planned it out, but compared to my friends' lives, it's a million times more complicated. I slept over my friend's house and he can orders what he FEELS like eating, doesn't have to follow a workout and eating schedule, doesn't have to worry about cardio/lifting 4-5 times a week.. etc. Thnx again for the answers! Added note! I have basically told my doctor, the above, and he tells me it's fine..? >.>! I think I might end up seeing a psych' again, since from the responses/messages I got were about my mental health!
Can you help me with this health question? I have to compose a menu with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. He also needs to cut down on his red meat intake. Please help me! Thanks in advance
What is the Navy Seal Weight standard? I'm 16 now, and i've been shaping up using navy seal guides. Any answers would be much appreciated. American navy seal weight standard is what? This is serious please no irrelevant answers. In another way of saying it, What generally is the weight of a typical seal?

want to gain weight but don't know how? ok, i am 5"2 and 83 lbs, I am a recovering anorexic and trying to fit in 2000 calories a day (this is very hard for me to do) I am trying to gain weight the healthy way with whole grains, lean meats nuts/seeds etc; however everyday, I seem to only be able to get up to about 1600 calories. I am trying to follow the food pyramid guide which says that for a 2000 calorie diet you should eat 6 oz of grain. Is it bad to eat more than 6 oz? will it make me blimp up or slowly add some nice muscle weight etc? Anyway, it is like I am having to re-train myself how to eat, so any other tips out there from anyone are greatly appreciated (except telling me to go to McDonalds!)

Can someone help me understand Nutrition facts? I think I understand but I thought I'd ask here. (I am not overweight but it's good to try to eat healthy and cut out junk etc.) I did 20min. on a treadmill and burned 100 calories (1 pack of 100 calorie Doritos!) So I jumped on the internet to research restauraunt food. Take Breadsticks from Pizza hut it says 150 calories so are items such as that, pizza, chips etc. per piece/slice? If so then a 5 pack of Breadsticks means 5X150=750 Calories so you just ate 750 calories correct? (Most restaurant guides say serves X grams. Half a Pzone is a serving so a whole Pzone is 1,260 Calories!!! IT TOOK 20MIN. to burn 100 CALORIES!!!!! Thanks for your help. :-)
What is essential in you dog hiking pack? Me and my German Shepherd mix are going to take an overnight hiking trip. He and I have hiked before, but it's little 3 hour trips over the mountain in town, and I've made the hike we are taking tomorrow before, even when I was little so I trust the spot we are hiking for both of our skill levels. I have the basics packed: water, first aid kit, emergency supplies, etc. I also have basics packed for him: extra leash, treats, a hitch leash for tie out, a pocket dog first aid guide, poop bags, food and portable bowl. At least two of my bottles are wide mouthed with big lids that can turn into water bowls for the dog, I have a calorie-high energy paste for him, and heavy duty dog boots. His collar, harness, and backpack are all tagged with his name. My brother is coming along too, so there will be an extra back pack for supplies. (He is a sight to see. Everyone on our normal hike has heard of him, and some have even asked to take pictures because people will never believe them.) He is conditioned to wear his pack, and I packed it fairly light (not over 5 lbs, on a 70 lb dog) and there is space in my bag for his if it is too much. But, this is a longer trip and much farther from home (and we are staying the night, hopefully at the camp site below so that we can get an early start. This is kind of a test trip for much longer, nicer hikes later on. Everything I have packed, most times, seems overkill, but I was always taught that is was better to have it and not need it to need it and not have it. So, dog hikers/campers, what have you added to your packs that you have found invaluable? Any funny stories, or advice to give about our extended trip to give me warning of what to expect?
WHAT IS SALSA? PLS TELL ME I N DETAILS. PLS READ MORE. ? I have read word SALSA many times when I read news on different kinds of foods. Today, while going thru similar news, it was mentioned: "Blend equal portion of yogurt with your favorite SALSA for a fat free, low-calorie dressing for salads, chicken, and fish". What does this mean? Please guide me in details to the greatest extent as I am layman as far as the use of SALSA is concerned. Thanks a lot indeed.
A question about weight gain during Beachbody's Insanity workout? Hi all, Recently, I began doing the Insanity workout in order to get lean and get ready to go off to college (hopefully in Florida, meaning lots of beaches and bathing suits). I've been doing the workout for about a week and a half, and I've noticed that I've actually gained a pretty big amount of weight since starting. I've been following the diet guide as closely as I can (always fat-free foods, measuring/weighing everything, following the meal plans, etc.,). I also did the calorie calculator, so I know how many calories I need when working out. But somehow my weight has gone up from 118-121 (it fluctuates, but that's the usual range) to about 125... As stated before, I've followed the nutrition guide closely and kept my own food journal, so I know I've been eating right. I've also pushed myself pretty hard during the workouts, and I'm always sweating and exhausted at the end, so I know I worked out hard enough to burn some major calories. So I'm just wondering why the weight went up by 4 pounds? My clothes don't fit any differently so I don't think it's muscle weight.. My jeans have gotten a *tiny* bit more loose around the waist, but otherwise there's not much difference. Some background information to help: I'm 17, female, almost 5'5, and moderately active. I'm not skinny, but I'm not chubby either, I have an average build, and my weight is pretty evenly distributed. I try to eat about 1500 to 1700 calories a day, and before doing Insanity I've done P90X and ran on the X-country team at school. To prepare for the Insanity program, I started running 30 minutes on the treadmill at a fast pace 3 days a week, and did body weight exercises. I don't have any health problems (no thyroid issues, so that's checked off the list). The only possible guess I can come up with is that at one point I was eating very little (about 1200 calories) for about 2 years, and now the larger portions are catching up with me. The thing is, I tried to gradually raise the number of calories so that my body would take it better (I knew the way I was eating before wasn't a good long-term solution, so I worked to change it), so the sudden weight increase just has me worried a bit. Any ideas? Did anyone else have this problem? Is this much weight gain normal at the beginning of the workout? I never got this much weight gain before, and usually I would lose it in about a week when I start a new workout. Thanks a lot in advance, and sorry for the absurd amount of things I wrote, just figured the more detail I give, the easier an accurate answer would be. :)

Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes and incidence (Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition)) Both kwashiorkor (edematous PCM) and marasmus (nonedematous PCM) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas in which dietary amino acid content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. Marasmus affects infants ages 6 to 18 months as a result of breast-feeding failure, or a debilitating condition such as chronic diarrhea. In industrialized countries, PCM may occur secondary to chronic metabolic disease that decreases protein and calorie intake or absorption, or trauma that increases protein and calorie requirements. In the United States, PCM is estimated to occur to some extent in 50% of elderly people in nursing homes. Those who aren’t allowed anything by mouth for an extended period are at high risk of developing PCM. Conditions that increase protein-calorie requirements include severe burns and injuries, systemic infections, and cancer (accounts for the largest group of hospitalized patients with PCM). Conditions that cause defective utilization of nutrients include malabsorption syndrome, short-bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.
