I just got hired at the insurance company (united health group) for billing/enrollment, and i will be starting in the next few days. it sounds like a decent job and good benefits. Individual health insurance vs. group health insurance? I recently switch jobs and the company I will be working for offers a group health insurance plan that I feel is too expensive ($1035 per month for a family). I was thinking about purchasing a similar health plan from "United Healthcare" or "Aetna". I guess my question is, I originally thought group plans were suppose to be less expensive than purchasing a plan on your own. When I received a quote from "United Healthcare" it was between $350-450 per month. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Four, women tend to be favored more in child custody and divorce law. She nibbles on beet salad for lunch, but Matisse's real meal — fats, nutrients and fluids — come from an intravenous line running from her backpack to a vein in her stomach. After six years of IV feedings, the pressure on her liver is becoming life-threatening and she is running out of usable veins. Often, she is doubled over with chronic pain and vomiting. After months of fundraising in their native New Zealand, Wayne and Jodee Reid, Matisse's parents, packed up their family of six and traveled 8,500 miles to Pittsburgh for a multi-organ transplant that could save their 6-year-old daughter's life. As they wait for a stomach, bowel and pancreas to become available, the Reids must draw from $260,000 they raised, money they are counting on to carry them through the years it will take Matisse to recover from her operation. Like other foreign families in the United States to obtain lifesaving medical care, the Reids are here on tourist visas, which do not allow them to find jobs. Families say that makes it more difficult to sustain themselves on the long journey of saving their children's lives, adding to their anxiety. "At the end of the day, we're just parents trying to do what's best for their children," Jodee said as Matisse, who is often in pain, played upstairs in the home they rent in this Pittsburgh suburb. The Reids arrived in Pittsburgh in January, expecting to spend about three years here for Matisse's operation and long recovery. But with the wait for the transplants expecting to take eight months to a year, they now realize they may have to stay closer to five years — and it's unclear whether the money they raised will be enough. If they spend only $60,000 annually — a tight stretch for a family of six — the money will run out in about four years. Often, coming to the United States is the only choice for families seeking complicated transplants, leaving people who have always worked dependent on charitable people and organizations. On rare occasions, they are forced to return home. "There's no provision whatsoever, even for humanitarian grounds, to allow these people to work," said Bruce Larson, director of the international personnel office at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which treated about 8,000 foreigners last year at its hospitals, including several hundred children. The federal government does not track how many of the millions of people who come here on tourist visas are seeking medical care. Working with the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said he plans to sponsor a bill that would grant work permits to parents of children who need more than six months of medical care. But it could get hung up in the bitter debate over immigration reform. Cohen wants to attach his bill to the broader reform legislation, which collapsed in the Senate in June. "I should hope it would have support. It's logical, it's humane," Cohen said. "I can't imagine anyone thinking this would be a security risk. It's just a humanitarian issue." Matisse was born on Christmas Day 2000 with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a disorder in which the small or large intestines lose their ability to contract and push food, stool and air through the gastrointestinal tract. It affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States and is most common in children and the elderly. The cause is unknown but symptoms include severe bowel problems — from vomiting and diarrhea to chronic pain. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where Matisse is awaiting the triple transplant, treats fewer than 30 international patients a year. Years of lobbying convinced the New Zealand government to cover the $1.4 million cost of Matisse's planned transplants. Independently, the Reids also raised nearly $260,000 in donations to sustain Matisse and her three siblings — Rachel, 15, Kalani, 9 and Fraanz, 2 — during the years it will take Matisse to recover. "It's only the highly motivated or those with some resources to raise money to come to another country, whether it's England, France or the United States, can come," said Dr. George Mazariegos, director of pediatric transplants at Children's Hospital. "Right now the care is very disproportional to the need." Intestinal transplants have been done only about 1,300 times since 1989, nearly all in the United States, Mazariegos said. A study by a group of doctors in Columbus, Ohio, found that of eight children who underwent such transplants, two died a short while later. Of those who survived, the study found their lifestyles were significantly improved and at least three had normal bowel movements within 18 months. For the hundreds of foreigners who come to America every year seeking medical care, the issue of finances is ever present. Sometimes, medical care can take years, putting families in a financial bind. According to immigration attorneys, there are two alternatives for foreigners to receive work permits, and both are rarely effective. A family can open a small business. However, to ensure the business is viable they must invest at least $100,000. In this case, the owners of the business would have their visa status changed and they would get working papers. Getting hired by a research institute, such as a university, can also provide a work visa. However, there are just a few thousand such visas issued annually and they normally expire within days of the lottery. Non-profit research institutes, such as hospitals, do have an unlimited number of work visas that they can issue annually and a foreigner hired by such an institution could get working papers as well. Wayne Reid is a carpenter by trade and desperately wants to work — to keep busy and earn money for the family. Reyes, who was convicted last year on 10 securities fraud charges, refocused public attention on a scandal that touched off hundreds of government investigations and hastened the dismissal of top corporate executives. Securities regulators and federal prosecutors vowed to get to the bottom of stock-option abuses two years ago after media reports exposed their prevalence. Dozens of companies fired executives and ordered costly internal investigations. Lately, however, the backdating issue has been playing out with a whimper rather than a bang, with many cases quietly resolved. "When the government sends out 100-something subpoenas, it sets off a lot of activity, and it results in enormous costs to companies in terms of accountants and lawyers and restatements," said former prosecutor Matthew J. Jacobs, who has advised companies on how to address backdating accusations. "The thing we don't know is whether there are other shoes that are going to drop." Reyes, 45, took a remarkable fall from grace from his perch in Silicon Valley, where he led a prominent data-switch company, had deep family ties and owned part of the San Jose Sharks hockey team. Prosecutors singled out Reyes because of his substantial authority in doling out stock options, which rewarded favored employees with all-but- guaranteed large payouts. He must pay $15 million in fines but will remain free pending an appeal of the conviction, U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer said. "I'm sorry," Reyes told the audience in the San Francisco courtroom, according to the Associated Press. "There were many things I would have done differently." The Securities and Exchange Commission, which at one point had 160 open stock-option investigations, resolved many of them without bringing charges. Now only half that number of cases remain active, an agency spokesman said. The SEC has settled backdating accusations with six companies and has charged 29 executives with wrongdoing. In the largest such case, former United Health Group chief executive William W. McGuire in December agreed to surrender $468 million in cash and options to settle the SEC's backdating charges. "Whenever a corporate officer misleads investors about a company's performance by secretly backdating stock options, the integrity of our markets is undermined," SEC Chairman Christopher Cox said at the time. Options give company employees and officers the chance to buy company stock at a set price within a specific time frame. Backdating the awards can make them more valuable. The practice is not necessarily illegal but it can violate securities and tax laws if it is not disclosed properly to investors. Meanwhile, the Justice Department's marquee backdating prosecutions are simmering on the back burner. "Many companies see it as a natural extension of the competition they've faced in other aspects of their business." Blue Shield of California and Health Net of California is now offering lower-cost policies allowing members to seek medical care in Mexico. Florida-based United Group Programs, which sells self-insurance policies to small businesses, offers a plan that sends patients to Bumrungrad International hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. It says the plan will save employers more than 50 percent on major medical costs and slash employees' out-of-pocket expenses to zero. Why are Democrats mad at Bush for giving free health care to those that need it? Late last week, the Bush administration announced plans to curb the practice of states putting already-insured and non-needy children on the rolls of a federal program that subsidizes health insurance for uninsured and needy children. Democrats were outraged. “This is a political attempt by the administration to try to intimidate states,” Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D., Ill.) told the Washington Post. The Democratic Congress had just passed two versions of a bill to let states expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to children in families making three and even four times the federal poverty level ($60,000 to $80,000 for a family of four). With his new rules and his veto threats against their bill, President Bush is spoiling their plans. But aside from the feigned outrage always involved in politics, why are Democrats be so unhappy about dedicating federal money only to those who need it, and not to those who don’t? In most parts of the United States, a family of four making $60,000 is doing pretty well and doesn’t need a handout or even a “hand up.” The answer is that Democrats in Congress do not just want the government to cover the needy and uninsured. They want to legislate incrementally until they have established universal or near-universal taxpayer-funded coverage, beginning with children. This is not the paranoid idea of a few conservatives, but a plan outlined in an April 9, 1993, memo from Hillary Clinton’s health-care task force. The memo, which became public later only thanks to lawsuits forcing sunshine rules on the task force, was previously mentioned in a Washington Times report ten years ago, when the SCHIP program was first created. The memo describes three possible methods of implementing universal health coverage. The first two involve a state-by-state phase-in of plans that involve state and federal government funds and employer mandates for the working uninsured. But “Option 3” would have implemented a similar program by population group, beginning with children and expanding from there. The proposed name for the program, Kids First, had deeper meaning than one might suspect: it was the front end of a plan that would later cover everyone. The memo states that: Part I Kids First is really a precursor to the new system. It is intended to be freestanding and administratively simple, with States given broad flexibility in its design so that it can be easily folded into existing/future program structures. Part II of this proposal involves the development of purchasing cooperative (PC) structures and the actual phase-in of all other population groups within the PC system. The memo also laid out a timeline: By January 1995, all employers were to be mandated to purchase health insurance for their employees’ children. By July 1997, all employers would have been required to purchase health plans for the employees themselves. By January 1998, self-insured adults would have been required to buy policies under the same “purchasing cooperative” structure. The state would then roll into the system children on other government programs besides Kids First, and then perhaps even “early retirees with benefits.” This grand plan never came to pass because HillaryCare failed. But although Kids First is different in many ways from SCHIP (which has no employer mandates, for example), the political strategy is the same. It fits perfectly with Democrats’ current legislative attempt to expand the program to wealthier families. It does not fit at all with the Bush administration’s new rules, announced last week. These would, under most circumstances, bar SCHIP for children in families making more than 250 percent of the poverty level (according to 2007 poverty guidelines form the Department of Health and Human Services, that’s a family of four earning $51,625 a year). The administration’s new rules seem pretty reasonable — even tame. They would make states insure 95 percent of poor children (below 200 percent of the poverty level) before diverting their federal grants on the middle class (above 250 percent). Critics note that no state has put 95 percent of its uninsured children on SCHIP, but this would suggest that states have failed their mission, not that they should start giving handouts to people who can easily insure their own children. In order to prevent non-needy families and their employers from dropping private coverage and putting children on the dole, the administration will also require non-needy children to be uninsured for a year before they are eligible for SCHIP. If the income threshold for SCHIP already sounds high for a family of four, it is more so for larger families. My father provided a pretty good life to our family of seven on his comfortable but modest university professor’s salary. He says he never even thought of going on welfare — but maybe he should have. Even Bush’s new “draconian” SCHIP rules would have allowed all five of us kids to go on government health insurance, as long as Dad was making $77,725 or less. The Democrats’ plan would have covered us all on a $93,000 salary, or even (had we lived in New York State) $124,000! (I have trouble imagining my own mother as a six-figure welfare queen.) The Democrats’ SCHIP outrage, while perhaps politically savvy (who could oppose insuring children?), has nothing to do with the real problem of those poor and uninsured. There are several ways the government could make insurance affordable — President Bush has proposed a generous health-insurance tax deduction, and others have proposed a repeal or circumvention of burdensome state0insurance mandates that massively inflate prices. But the Democrats’ expansion of SCHIP into the middle class is not a solution to any existing problem. It is welfare for those already faring well, and with an eye toward expanding government in the future.

The researchers studied Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and the US, as well as 19 European countries, with a total population of 984 million, and looked at access to 67 newer cancer drugs. They found that the proportions of female cancer patients surviving five years beyond diagnosis in France, Spain, Germany, Italy were 71 per cent, 64 per cent, 63 per cent and 63 per cent respectively. In the UK it was 53 per cent. Among men the proportions still alive at five years in the same countries were 53 per cent, 50 per cent, 53 per cent and 48 per cent. Again in the UK it was lower at 43 per cent." The survivability rates beyond five years of diagnosis in the United States are far in excess of all of these socialized countries with socialized medicine. Here's the point, though, and it takes a while in the story for it to show up. Here's the reference in the story about the American system. Now, it's the same thing with tax revenue that we were just discussing. If current tax rates are producing record amounts of revenue and rapid economic growth, why would you change it? If the US health care system is the best in the world, despite its flaws -- if it's the best in the world and people who come down with deadly diseases survive much longer here because of access to drugs much sooner and much cheaper than people who live in socialized countries have access to it -- why in the world would you change it? Well, there's a simple answer. Socialists want control. They want as much control over us as they can get. It's about power. It's about enlarging the State. It's about making you dependent, and that eliminates your threatening their power. The less wealth you have, the less mobility, freedom, the less of a threat you are to their power. This is liberalism through and through. Now you might ask: "How come so many average Americans are liberals and they're willing to give up this power?" Because they're dupes. I'm talking about the leaders. I'm talking about the people in Washington. I'm talking about the think tank leaders. I'm talking about the special interest groups. All too often cancer’s burdens are far heavier on the “medically undeserved” people than the general population; the “medically undeserved” being: the poor, the uninsured, and ethnic minorities. Cancer health disparities, as the NCI defines them, are “differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of cancer and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific populations groups in the United States.” The NCI’s goal is to eliminate these disparities to allow the undeserved part of the population to reap the benefits of the huge amount of progress that has been made in the preventing, detecting, diagnosing, treating, etc. of cancer. They plan on reaching this goal by studying/identifying the issues that add to the disparities, and making partnerships and collaborations with organizations to address and solve them. United... a new political party/policy? well, it's not so much a party as a way of thinking... you can still be a Republican or Democrat, and be in the United Party... I propose a group/way of thought where we put the major issues that the parties differ on behind us, at least long enough to work on the issues that we can ALL (for the most part) agree need to be adressed... Some of the issues that could be addressed (graned, this is all new and subject to change): 1. Terror... we need to keep up the war on terror, and need to take a more pro-active stance in dealing with terror related countries... especially those with heavy pro-al-queda links 2. Welfare reform... it's highly needed in some sort of way... there are several ideas floating around on how to make it more effective, but regaurdless, doing something to fix the problem, at least a little, is better than the current problem... 3. Here's what the president of my college/employer just wrote: " On Friday, June 15, Governor Rick Perry vetoed $154 million in funding allocated to community college group health insurance. The cut will take effect in the 2008-09 fiscal year and will result in a $3.8 million (approximately) reduction in state appropriations for Collin College. In his veto, Governor Perry stated that community colleges had falsified their appropriation requests submitted to the Legislative Budget Board. We absolutely take strong issue with this allegation. To date, no evidence supporting the Governor’s claim has been released. All 50 Texas community college presidents have united in making the Governor and the media aware that this action will be fiscally devastating to community college students and the economic future of Texas. " Bottom line: this means that my paycheck which currently has over $600 in deductions for insurance will now make it over $900 per month taken out of my paycheck... ...This means, that in the county I live in, the average household earns over $73,000. My hubby and I earn under $44,000, and barely make ends meet. I’m nearly 50 yrs old, and am of a very hard age for any future new employment. With this taking effect, my take home per month will be under $850 per month. My car payment (which is needed because it accommodates my hubbys wheelchair) is over $500 per month. I will be forced to take on a third job, since I already work two! Costa Mesa's illegal-immigration crackdown highlights the fears of many Activists worry that the city's enforcement of federal laws would affect more than just those guilty of serious crimes. By Jennifer Delson, Times Staff Writer January 30, 2007 In a city that has clashed loudly and publicly over immigration laws, the arrest of Marcelino Tzir Tzul underscored the worst fears in Costa Mesa's Latino community. The 37-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala was picked up for riding his bicycle on the wrong side of the street, brought before a federal agent at the city jail and then shipped to a federal lockup to await his likely deportation. For months, Latino activists had worried that Costa Mesa's decision to become one of the nation's first cities to enforce federal immigration laws would result in people such as Tzir being swept off the streets. "This is exactly what we feared," said Amin David, who heads Los Amigos of Orange County, a Latino advocacy group. But others, including the mayor of Costa Mesa, applaud the crackdown, even if it means that people who have committed minor crimes are caught in the process. "I believe illegal immigration is wrong. It's breaking the law," said Mayor Allan Mansoor, an Orange County sheriff's deputy. During a three-week period in December, 46 Latino men picked up in Costa Mesa were taken to the Mira Loma Detention Center in Lancaster to await deportation hearings. Half were held on misdemeanor charges. Tzir, who came to this country illegally in 2005, was headed to work on a chilly January morning when his luck ran out. A religious man who kept a Bible by his bed and three cheap suits in a closet for nightly church services, Tzir had come to Costa Mesa to send money home to his wife and three children. Wearing work boots and a blue sweatshirt stained from the previous day's work, Tzir rode his blue mountain bike down Placentia Avenue, through the heart of the town's Latino community. When he turned left on Hamilton Street, an officer stopped him and told him he was riding on the wrong side of the road. He also didn't have a bicycle license. Without an ID, Tzir was taken to the city jail, where a federal agent recently assigned to the city determined he was in the country illegally. Before he could alert family or friends, he was shipped to the lockup in Lancaster to await a deportation hearing. "The sin I committed was to enter this country illegally," Tzir said in a recent jailhouse interview in Spanish. "I regret the pain I have caused my family, but I will leave with my head held high because I know that all I did here was to work hard." Although Tzir's crime was minor, many of those swept up in Costa Mesa in December were arrested on serious charges. Of 20 arrest records the city was able to provide, most involved men in their mid-20s charged with crimes such as selling drugs and burglary. One involved a 19-year-old accused of having sex with a minor. Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said one man had an arrest record in five states and had been deported three times. Another had drug convictions and had been deported five times, she said. Wendy Leece, who was recently elected to the City Council, said having the agent in the jail would make the community a safer place. "There are a broad spectrum of crimes being committed," Leece said. "Maybe some are misdemeanors, but they are lawbreakers." By the time Tzir was able to call his wife, news of the ongoing crackdown had drifted through the city's immigrant community. Rumors about immigration raids and tips on avoiding the police spread. "Do the police want to pluck people off the streets like him when there are so many people who commit real crimes?" wondered the Rev. Oscar A. Ramirez of Iglesia Fuente de Amor (Fountain of Love Church) in Costa Mesa, where Tzir taught Bible classes. Others in Costa Mesa — where the immigration debate has colored local elections, drawn the attention of groups such as the Minuteman Project and become the fodder of national talk radio — see no shame in someone such as Tzir being picked up and ultimately deported. "The law is the law, and we need to enforce it, not here and there. They are all criminals the minute they step across the border," said Jason Mrochek, director of the Federal Immigration Reform & Enforcement Coalition, which runs anti-illegal-immigrant protests throughout Southern California. Tzir said he felt reluctant to sneak into the United States and did so only because of a pressing need for money. In Guatemala, he was a nurse in a rural health center outside Quiriguá, a small town best known for its Mayan ruins, where he dispensed prescription medicines, helped deliver babies and tended to the injured. He earned a college degree in health and studied the Bible so he could become a minister. When his employer cut his salary from $782 to $339 a month, he and his wife feared the money wouldn't be enough to make ends meet. "I felt all the doors closed to me, and I needed quick relief," Tzir said. Tzir's wife called a relative in Costa Mesa for help. The relative, who worked as a nanny in an Orange County home and declined to be identified because she also is in the country illegally, said she decided to pay a smuggler $14,000, which she had saved, to bring Tzir, as well as her own son, to Costa Mesa. When he arrived in Costa Mesa, Tzir said he found work quickly, pulling in about $400 a week. "He was motivated by the opportunities in this country," said roommate Marcos Roa, 53, a waiter in a Costa Mesa restaurant. "He dreamed of bringing his wife and children here." At first he lived with a relative but later moved into an aging apartment complex on Hamilton Avenue, where he paid $225 a month to share a bedroom. He cooked his own food, read the Bible and books on the English language, and spent four nights a week at the Iglesia Fuente de Amor, an Assemblies of God church, where once a week he taught Bible classes. Rudy Sandoval, a fellow Guatemalan who hired Tzir to install hardwood floors, said they spent much of their free time talking about the Bible and their faith. "He was serious. No liquor. No smoking. No women," said Sandoval's wife, Elma. "Not even a curse word." The night before he was picked up by police, Sandoval said, Tzir talked about how much he missed his family, saying, "What am I doing here? I've got to go home." Costa Mesa Police Chief Christopher Shawkey, a former Phoenix police commander recently named to the city's top police post, said his department was simply enforcing the law as it always had. "No dictate has been issued …. We're not going to change our enforcement policies because of this," Shawkey said. "We need to remain consistent." Shawkey said he called the Orange County Human Relations Commission to determine how to alleviate fears about the federal agent, but no decisions have been made. "I would hope that the community would still have trust in the Police Department," Shawkey said. For local Enriqueta Monterroso, who said she entered the United States illegally eight years ago, the crackdown has awakened memories. "I feel like I did in my last days in Guatemala when we thought the army would arrest us for any little thing," she said. Tzir, who is expected to remain jailed until his likely Feb. 13 deportation date, said he realized it was wrong to sneak into the United States. Universal health care? Let's look at this for what it is... Baby boomers. When they were young, credit card interest was tax deductable. This changed because too many of them were taking advantage of it. Prior to this, it was taboo to use credit except for homes and perhaps automobiles. They have proliferated on having a large voting voice of common interests, driving up CEO salaries, etc... A college degree used to guarantee a very good salary, but sadly not these days. Now you need an MBA. This seems as if it was another way of keeping the baby-boom generation in the high-end jobs. Now that the baby-boomers are nearing retirement, is it just one more thing they are all going to jump aboard? As they age, their medical costs are going to sky rocket, and they don't want to pay for it. Do they want you, the next generation, to pay for it? some pro McCanns have said that how could a mother kill her child? Well !!! This is an piece taken from an article by a journalist Lisa Lascody called When Moms Attack. I was shocked and horrified while watching the news coverage recently about the woman in Texas who beat her children to death with rocks. This is not the first time I have heard about a mother killing her kids, in fact, there seems to quite a few of these cases in the news lately. I remember the high profile cases of Susan Smith and Andrea Yates as well as a few others that did not garner as much media attention. While doing some research for this article, there was another horrible child murder. A young couple in Texas strangled and then decapitated their three young children. I began to wonder how many killer moms were out there. So, after a bit of online research and remedial statistical analysis, I found the surprising answer. It is called "maternal filicide" which is a fancy way of saying child murderer and it happens over 600 times each year. That number seemed ridiculously high to me so I doubled checked with the Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics and the FBI Crime statistics. They verified that mothers kill their own kids over 600 times per year! That puts a pretty frightening face on the group calling itself the "Million Mom March". I wonder how many of those mothers are ticking time bombs? What sets them off and how can we protect their children? I know of at least one of those anti-gun moms who committed murder. She even spoke out against gun violence at the first Million Mom March in Washington, D.C. Then, a few months later, she shot and killed a boy. Now, she didn't kill her own child, but she did murder the boy she thought had shot her son. It turned out she got the wrong guy and shot an innocent person. What that group needed to be pushing was self control not gun control. Perhaps, after reading the rest of this article, they will see the dangers within their own group and switch their efforts to mother control. Gun control groups love to use the phony statistic of "13 kids per day die from firearms each year". Most of you reading this article know that number includes suicides, accidents and homicides. It also includes children up to 19 years old as well as crime-related deaths. So, if a police officer shoots and kills a 17-year-old armed robber that is counted as one of the "13 kids per day". I decided to do a little comparison between the number of kids killed by their mothers and the number of children killed with a firearm. I only used kids under the age of 5 for this comparison because they had their own special statistical category called infanticide. Plus, not too many kids under 5 are in gangs or committing suicide so the results would not be skewed. Children under the age of 5 in the United States are more likely to be killed by their parents than by anyone else. FBI crime stats show that in 1999 parents were responsible for 57% of these murders. Even though women commit less than 13% of all violent crime, they are responsible for about 50% of all parental murders. These killer moms almost never use a gun to kill their kids. They prefer a more hands-on approach like beating, drowning, shaking, strangling or suffocation. Others will resort to poisoning, stabbing or exposure to the elements. Less than 20% of the cases involved a parent shooting their child to death. (US Dept. of Justice Study, 1988) In 1999, there were 613 homicides of children under the age of 5. Of these homicides, only 73 were killed with a firearm while 351were killed by a parent! Of the 73 children killed with a firearm, about 20% of those were committed by one of the parents. So, that brings down the number down from 73 to 59. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1999) That is 351 cases of parents murdering their kids compared to 59 firearm-related homicides in one year. To be fair, I have been mainly discussing mothers. Since around half of all the parental murderers are mothers, that number is about 175. Still, those numbers are staggering. The numbers seem to indicate that kids have much more to fear from their own mothers than from most gun owners. In fact, legal gun owners are only responsible for less than one percent of all crimes. I am not anti-mother and I don't want to ban motherhood, but I do support reasonable mom-control laws like background checks, licensing & registration, waiting periods and a limit on the number of children one mother can raise. After all, isn't it worth it if it saves just one child?

DON’T GO THERE FOR ANYTHING for AS LONG AS IT TAKES to get gas prices down. PROBLEM: Frivolous government spending. DEMAND: The public wants it stopped. PUBLIC SOLUTION: Email, call, or write your State Representative, Senator, and Congressman and tell them to start cutting their budget, PERIOD. Give them a time frame and demand a WEEKLY progress report. Demand they cut their government salaries in half. Demand they give up their health care benefits that are paid for by the public, policies the public can’t afford for them selves. Demand a 25% cut in their total budget within 90 days. Don’t stop sending emails, making calls, or writing letters until the budget is reduced and if you don’t see results, demand the politician to abdicate them self from their position. Don’t be afraid to rebel! Support and elect a candidate that will close the door to special interest groups and take an active part with you in dismantling a government that serves itself instead of the people.

Commercial weight loss diets are all similarly effective at 6 months, and those with support are more effective at 12 months, according to the results of the randomized BBC "diet trials" reported in the June 3 issue of the BMJ. Participants in these trials were filmed as part of a BBC television series. "Most adults in the United States diet at some time, and trends in the United Kingdom are similar," write Helen Truby, MD, from the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, and colleagues. "Long term success rates are poor, with 50% of weight loss being regained within one year. Although commercial diets provide consumers with a plethora of choice, data on their comparative efficacy are limited." Using a community-based sample of otherwise healthy overweight and obese adults, this 6-month, multicenter, unblended controlled trial compared 4 popular commercial weight loss programs with a control group. These diets were the Slim-Fast plan (a meal replacement approach), Weight Watchers pure points program (an energy-controlled diet with weekly group meetings), Dr Atkins' new diet revolution (a self-monitored low carbohydrate eating plan), and Rosemary Conley's eat-yourself-slim diet and fitness plan (a low-fat diet and a weekly group exercise class). Primary endpoints were changes in weight and body fat during 6 months. Compared with the control group, all diets were associated with a significant loss of body fat and weight during 6 months, but outcomes in the 4 diet groups did not differ significantly from each other. Intent-to-treat analysis revealed that average weight loss was 5.9 kg, and average fat loss was 4.4 kg during 6 months. Although the Atkins diet resulted in significantly higher weight loss during the first 4 weeks, it was no more or less effective than the other diets by the end of the study. At 12 months, 158 participants (54% of the original sample) returned data, and only 58 (45%) were still compliant with their assigned diets (9 to Atkins, 20 to Weight Watchers, 9 to Slim-Fast, 20 to Rosemary Conley). More participants in the unsupported programs (Atkins diet and Slim-Fast) withdrew than in the supported programs (P = .04), and weight rebound after the initial 6 months was higher in the unsupported programs. All diets resulted in a clinically useful weight loss of around 10% after 12 months in participants who had kept to their original diet. "Clinically useful weight loss and fat loss can be achieved in adults who are motivated to follow commercial diets for a substantial period," the authors write. "Given the limited resources for weight management in the NHS [National Health System], healthcare practitioners should discuss with their patients programmes known to be effective." Study limitations include varied compliance with each diet, small number of participants, and effect of media interest on motivation to meet goal weights and patients' expectations of weight loss. One of the authors has disclosed receiving consulting fees for serving on the scientific advisory panel of Slimming World. In an accompanying editorial, David Arterburn, MD, MPH, from the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, Wash, notes the high costs of some commercial diets and the low rate of ongoing compliance with the assigned diets at 1 year. "The challenge to researchers in obesity is to take weight loss studies, especially those involving commercial programmes and private funding, to the next level," Dr Arterburn writes. "'Diet Trials II' would serve us best by evaluating long term health outcomes, cost effectiveness, and novel strategies of improving adherence and weight maintenance. Such strategies might include economic incentives for participants and researchers collaborating with employers and healthcare providers."

Victims are convinced with false promises of a good job and a better way of living, and then forced to work under abusive and inhuman conditions. Victims of trafficking are brought into the system through several means. Most victims of trafficking today come from three populations. First, parents may sell children to traffickers in order to pay off debts or gain income. Second, runaways or other displaced persons may be picked up by traffickers. Third, people who are seeking entry to other countries may be picked up by traffickers, and typically are misled into thinking that they will be free after being smuggled across the border. Definitions may very base upon that cultural variation of the crime. In the United States, when people think of human trafficking, they often refer to the illegal practice of migrant smuggling. They picture illegal immigrants from countries like Mexico or China arriving into the United States by way of freight trailer or cargo boat in search for job opportunities and freedom. Human trafficking is defined as sex trafficking in which commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or in which the person forced to perform such an act is under 18. While the conditions of transportation may be unknown, “smuggled” aliens knowingly and willingly enter the destination country to work or find work, they agree to being smuggled. However, a smuggling relationship may allow the opportunity for the smuggler to alter the relationship to trafficking. Persons who seek the help of smugglers often become victims of trafficking, in the destination country or en route. When victims have never consented to being smuggled are either kidnapped or deceived with false employment offers. Traffickers make a profit between seven billion and ten billion dollars a year globally, and it is know as the third largest source of illicit trade, behind guns and narcotics. According to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, the intelligence community predicts that revenue from trafficking “will outstrip the illicit trade in guns and narcotics within a decade.” (Chauang, J., 2006). History Early trafficking efforts focused on white slavery. In 1904, the International Agreement for the Suppression of the White Slave Traffic was created, although very few countries signed it. In the following decades, the focus on trafficking continued to be on women and children who were sold into prostitution. The first concerted international effort to combat trafficking came in 1949, with the U.N. Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. Like other such conventions before it, the document focused on the trafficking of women and children for prostitution. The U.S. at the same time was undertaking its own efforts to combat global human trafficking. In 2000, Congress passed the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (also referred to as the Trafficking Victims Protection Act), the first U.S. law to comprehensively address the various aspects of human trafficking. The act included measures to help those who were trafficked and to increase punishment for traffickers, as well as to bolster other countries' efforts against trafficking. President Bill Clinton (D, 1993-2000) signed the act in October 2000, hailing it as "the most significant step we've ever taken to secure the health and safety of women at home and around the world." With regard to dealing with those who have been trafficked, the law represented a turnaround in policy. Previously, those found working illicitly were treated as criminals. The 2000 act changed that, treating those people as victims of a crime and seeking to help rather than punish them. Under the act, victims can be given a special visa, called a T-visa, allowing them to stay in the U.S. for up to three years if they would face hardship upon deportation. In return, the victims agree to assist in the investigation and prosecution of the traffickers. (As of March 2004, 448 victims of trafficking had been granted a T-visa.) The U.S. has also cracked down on Americans who may contribute to trafficking abroad. For example, Congress has passed legislation under which Americans who travel overseas to frequent child prostitutes, known as "sex tourism," can be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. And the Defense Department has also established a "zero tolerance" policy toward U.S. servicemen who may contribute to human trafficking overseas. In addition, individual states have also begun to pass human trafficking legislation. Texas and Washington State were the first two states to pass such legislation, and Arizona and California are considering similar legislation.
