I just got hired at the insurance company (united health group) for billing/enrollment, and i will be starting in the next few days. it sounds like a decent job and good benefits. Is this a waste of my health care dollars? United Health care group is paying their employees to show up at town hall meetings to disrupt the meetings. Should white women be considered a minority group in the United States? White women complain that they should be considered to a be a minority group because they have less economic and political power as men but dont they have more power than men in some areas. For one white women live longer than any group of people in the us and the majority of health care funding goes towards their issue. Secondly, all women are still not required by federal law to sign up for selective service when they turn 18 like men. Three, white women were more receive a lighter sentence for the same crime or be sentenced to death for capital crimes such as 1st degree murder because of their race and gender. Four, women tend to be favored more in child custody and divorce law. So if all my points are proven to be true why are white women considered to be a minority group like blacks, hispanics, and indians if they receive more special privileges like these groups?

If I file independent on my taxes, will I loose my insurance from UHC as my parents' dependent? I live in the state of Indiana and am currently on my father's group insurance from United Health Care. I know that Indiana will allow dependents to stay on their parents' insurance up to the age of 24 regardless of student status. I'm a student anyway, but I want to file independent on my taxes this year. However, I don't want to loose my insurance. Will my tax status affect my dependency on insurance?

I'm attempting to get into an ivy league school and need all the help I can get. GPA - 4.68 (unweighted) Taking - 5 or 6 AP classes in my senior year and took 2 in my junior year List of Extracurriculars: •Editor of the school newspaper •Executive Council member •Tutor/Peer Mediator •Went to Georgetown Leadership Conference •Teaching Guitar to younger children for 3 years •Organizer of Save Darfur campaign •Member of SADD club •Member of Stand Tall •Robotics Club •Champion Figure Skater •Gymnastics/Dance Student for over 10 years. •National Honors Society •Foreign Language Society •Play in school orchestra (violin and flute) •Dance team I don't know what information to put on the application or how many to put. Still doing: Job (do i even really need work experience for college?) In the U.S., health care costs are getting so high that some businesses and insurance companies are starting to eye the potential savings of outsourcing health care. "It's just one of the many ways in which our world is flattening," said Arnold Milstein, chief physician at New York-based Mercer Health & Benefits who's researching the feasibility of outsourcing medical care for three Fortune 500 corporations. "Many companies see it as a natural extension of the competition they've faced in other aspects of their business." Blue Shield of California and Health Net of California is now offering lower-cost policies allowing members to seek medical care in Mexico. Florida-based United Group Programs, which sells self-insurance policies to small businesses, offers a plan that sends patients to Bumrungrad International hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. It says the plan will save employers more than 50 percent on major medical costs and slash employees' out-of-pocket expenses to zero. Health care in the United States...? Before you read the question, I do know that this is a loaded question. I am looking for everyone's answers (to this question). Most people will concede that there is a problem with health care in the United States. General consensus (and statistics) shows that the population pays too much for health care. Insurance companies deny reasonable claims to save money when they shouldn't. Doctors and nurses are overworked and not (for the most part) paid based on performance. Preventative care doesn't hold as much importance, leading to more doctor visits down the road. Because of insurance companies, doctors and hospitals cannot give the care they would like to. Due to drug legislation (including recent bills passed) prescriptions are becoming extremely expensive. A drug can be sold at many times the production cost for a large profit (for the drug company). On the flip-side: Without drugs being expensive, companies have less want to spend so much in research and development. Remember that almost all statistics can be interpreted more than one way. Each is slightly different, but has benefits. Each is called social medicine, similar to how the US now has social firefighting (no more shields on houses) and social police (not so much guns for hire anymore). This is paid for by taxes. The amount that people generally pay towards health insurance would be, on average, the same in taxes. The difference would be that everyone gets care and there is no insurance company to deny claims. Why? There are no claims to deny. The government also cover all, or most of the cost of prescriptions. There can still be competition between drug makers and there would still be a profit to be made. It's just that now prescriptions are affordable for everyone. Are there downsides to this system? Of course. Nevertheless, I honestly believe that it's a better system than what we have now. The only drawbacks I've heard were mainly from the conservative groups. "It's Communist/Socialist." -So then, our police, firefighters, road-workers, etc. Communist policies as well? Then there was Giuliani with his whole cancer speech which was later found to be completely incorrect, and noted so by his aides. "Would you pay more taxes for this?" -For the assurance of health care? Of course! I would definitely stop paying insurance and just pay a higher tax. Our taxes are relatively low as it stands right now and there are plenty of taxes that can be abolished. "You would need oversight committees." -Yes. Is that such a bad thing? "You would have to wait longer to be seen." -Actually, it's quite the opposite as evidenced by the other countries with it. There wouldn't be half the crap that there is now so patients would be able to get in and out much more quickly. Again, what do you think? And please, let's keep this civilized and as informed as possible. They come here for better specialists I agree with. Overall, most doctors are paid more and trained better in the US. So, there are better ones here. And I don't think universal health care is failing in those countries due to the system. I think it has to do with the other problems in the government as well. Considering I'm also in health care, I see everything too. What I forgot to mention is that I DEFINITELY want to hear both sides of this. Health Insurance Scam? I want to get my own Health insurance plan and get off my companies group plan. I was looking at many different plans online and have talked to quite a few agents. I wanted a well known insurance plan like BCBS, Aetna ,or United health care. I found a plan that I really like. Its United Health One which is said to be a form of United health care. I spoke with the agent for about an hour and decided it was a plan I would like. I gave him all my information, including credit card info and banking info. I printed out my whole application and have a receipt for my first months payment. Now i'm freaked out that is a scam and not really insurance or something. Has anyone gotten insurance through an online application? Did you get the insurance cards? did your premium go up? all help with be appreciated. Thanks!

I had a question about annual deductibles....? I had 2 medical procedures done in the same year (2 months apart). I had been on the insurance for a few years (United Health Care Group). They are having me pay in full for the 1st x-ray (statement says they are counting it towards my annual deductible) and then they are paying in full for the 2nd identical x-ray at the same IN-NETWORK hospital stating that it's a covered expense. I phoned UHC & they say both procedures were under the correct limits to be covered but when the case is reviewed it comes back as my responsibility. Both instances were filed under the hospital billing side. I just don't understand why they decided to pay for one & not the other. I have spoken with other United Healthcare Members that have had the same situation occur & they also don't understand UHC's methodology of selecting when to charge an identical covered in-network procedure (in the same business year) towards the annual deductible.

Industry executives refer to the practice as "purging," Potter said. "When that business comes up for renewal, the underwriters jack the rates up so much, the employer has no choice but to drop insurance," Potter said. CNN obtained a transcript of a 2008 Cigna conference call with investors in which company executives use the term "purge." But in an e-mail to CNN, Cigna spokesman Chris Curran denied the company engages in purging. "We do not practice that. We will offer rates that are reflective of the competitive group health insurance market. We always encourage our clients to compare our proposed rates to those available from other carriers," Curran wrote. Cigna had revenue of $19.1 billion in 2008, according to the company Web site." Conservatives for Patients Rights (CPR), an anti-health care reform group led by the disgraced former CEO of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Rick Scott, began running a commercial attacking the British health care system. The TV ad runs through “tragic stories” of British citizens who it portrays as being against government-run health care such as the National Health Service (NHS). Furious Kate Spall and Katie Brickell claim that their views on the NHS have been misrepresented by a free market campaign group opposed to Mr Obama’s reforms in a bid to discredit the UK system. CPR’s ad campaign is one of many misleading attacks being used by American conservatives against the United Kingdom’s single-payer health care system, which is so popular that even Conservative Party politicians unambiguously endorse it.
Anyone ever switch health insurance while pregnant? Only in the good ol USA do we have to stress about how in the world we're going to afford medical bills.. I have United Healthcare right now but they do not offer maternity coverage at all unless Im on a group plan. That is not an option for me because my work doesn't offer insurance. I've checked into BCBS but would they consider being pregnant a "pre-existing condition". Why are Democrats mad at Bush for giving free health care to those that need it? Late last week, the Bush administration announced plans to curb the practice of states putting already-insured and non-needy children on the rolls of a federal program that subsidizes health insurance for uninsured and needy children. Democrats were outraged. “This is a political attempt by the administration to try to intimidate states,” Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D., Ill.) told the Washington Post. The Democratic Congress had just passed two versions of a bill to let states expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to children in families making three and even four times the federal poverty level ($60,000 to $80,000 for a family of four). With his new rules and his veto threats against their bill, President Bush is spoiling their plans. But aside from the feigned outrage always involved in politics, why are Democrats be so unhappy about dedicating federal money only to those who need it, and not to those who don’t? In most parts of the United States, a family of four making $60,000 is doing pretty well and doesn’t need a handout or even a “hand up.” The answer is that Democrats in Congress do not just want the government to cover the needy and uninsured. They want to legislate incrementally until they have established universal or near-universal taxpayer-funded coverage, beginning with children. This is not the paranoid idea of a few conservatives, but a plan outlined in an April 9, 1993, memo from Hillary Clinton’s health-care task force. The memo, which became public later only thanks to lawsuits forcing sunshine rules on the task force, was previously mentioned in a Washington Times report ten years ago, when the SCHIP program was first created. The memo describes three possible methods of implementing universal health coverage. The first two involve a state-by-state phase-in of plans that involve state and federal government funds and employer mandates for the working uninsured. But “Option 3” would have implemented a similar program by population group, beginning with children and expanding from there. The proposed name for the program, Kids First, had deeper meaning than one might suspect: it was the front end of a plan that would later cover everyone. The memo states that: Part I Kids First is really a precursor to the new system. It is intended to be freestanding and administratively simple, with States given broad flexibility in its design so that it can be easily folded into existing/future program structures. Part II of this proposal involves the development of purchasing cooperative (PC) structures and the actual phase-in of all other population groups within the PC system. The memo also laid out a timeline: By January 1995, all employers were to be mandated to purchase health insurance for their employees’ children. By July 1997, all employers would have been required to purchase health plans for the employees themselves. By January 1998, self-insured adults would have been required to buy policies under the same “purchasing cooperative” structure. The state would then roll into the system children on other government programs besides Kids First, and then perhaps even “early retirees with benefits.” This grand plan never came to pass because HillaryCare failed. But although Kids First is different in many ways from SCHIP (which has no employer mandates, for example), the political strategy is the same. It fits perfectly with Democrats’ current legislative attempt to expand the program to wealthier families. It does not fit at all with the Bush administration’s new rules, announced last week. These would, under most circumstances, bar SCHIP for children in families making more than 250 percent of the poverty level (according to 2007 poverty guidelines form the Department of Health and Human Services, that’s a family of four earning $51,625 a year). The administration’s new rules seem pretty reasonable — even tame. They would make states insure 95 percent of poor children (below 200 percent of the poverty level) before diverting their federal grants on the middle class (above 250 percent). Critics note that no state has put 95 percent of its uninsured children on SCHIP, but this would suggest that states have failed their mission, not that they should start giving handouts to people who can easily insure their own children. In order to prevent non-needy families and their employers from dropping private coverage and putting children on the dole, the administration will also require non-needy children to be uninsured for a year before they are eligible for SCHIP. If the income threshold for SCHIP already sounds high for a family of four, it is more so for larger families. My father provided a pretty good life to our family of seven on his comfortable but modest university professor’s salary. He says he never even thought of going on welfare — but maybe he should have. Even Bush’s new “draconian” SCHIP rules would have allowed all five of us kids to go on government health insurance, as long as Dad was making $77,725 or less. The Democrats’ plan would have covered us all on a $93,000 salary, or even (had we lived in New York State) $124,000! (I have trouble imagining my own mother as a six-figure welfare queen.) The Democrats’ SCHIP outrage, while perhaps politically savvy (who could oppose insuring children?), has nothing to do with the real problem of those poor and uninsured. There are several ways the government could make insurance affordable — President Bush has proposed a generous health-insurance tax deduction, and others have proposed a repeal or circumvention of burdensome state0insurance mandates that massively inflate prices. But the Democrats’ expansion of SCHIP into the middle class is not a solution to any existing problem. It is welfare for those already faring well, and with an eye toward expanding government in the future.

Liberals Seek Health-care Access for Illegals By Stephen Dinan Fearful that they're losing ground on immigration and health care, a group of House Democrats is pushing back and arguing that any health care bill should extend to all legal immigrants and allow illegal immigrants some access. The Democrats, trying to stiffen their party's spines on the contentious issue, say it's unfair to bar illegal immigrants from paying their own way in a government-sponsored exchange. Legal immigrants, they say, regardless of how long they've been in the United States, should be able to get government-subsidized health care if they meet the other eligibility requirements. "Legal permanent residents should be able to purchase their plans, and they should also be eligible for subsidies if they need it. Undocumented, if they can afford it, should be able to buy their own private plans. It keeps them out of the emergency room," said Rep. Michael M. Honda, California Democrat and chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Mr. Honda was joined by more than 20 of his colleagues in two letters laying out the demands. Coverage for immigrants is one of the thorniest issues in the health care debate, and one many Democratic leaders would like to avoid. But immigrant rights groups and the Democrats who sent the letters say they have to take a stand now. President Obama has said he does not want health care proposals to cover illegal immigrants. The bill drawn up by Sen. Max Baucus, Montana Democrat and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, excludes illegal immigrants from his proposed health care exchange. Mr. Honda and his allies, though, say illegal immigrants should be allowed to pay for insurance if they can afford it, even if it comes through a government-established exchange. As a generally young, healthy part of the population, illegal immigrants could help reduce overall costs for those who buy into health exchange plans, the lawmakers said. The Democrats' letters, however, do not issue ultimatums or threaten to withhold support for the bills if their requests aren't met. The National Council of La Raza launched its own "flood their voice mail" campaign last week to put pressure on Mr. Baucus to expand coverage in his proposal to include all legal immigrants and to drop verification language in the legislation that would prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining coverage. Mr. Honda told The Washington Times that he's not pushing for illegal immigrants to gain access to taxpayer-subsidized benefits. "That's an argument that's been done already," he said. Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, said proposals that include government coverage for illegal immigrants leave him incredulous. "If anybody can, with a straight face, advocate that we should provide health insurance for people who broke into our country, broke our law and for the most part are criminals, I don't know where they ever would draw the line," he said. Mr. King, who opposes Democrats' health care plans in general, said illegal immigrant access in legislation "would be a poison pill that would cause health care to go down" to defeat. Twenty-nine Democrats signed on to the letter on legal immigrants, while 21 signed the letter on covering illegal immigrants. Although the leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus signed the legal-immigrant letter in their capacity as CBC officials, they signed the other letter as individual members of Congress. Under the 1996 welfare law overhaul, Congress restricted most federal benefits to longtime holders of green cards - those who have been in the country at least five years. But Democrats chipped away at that rule when they reauthorized the State Children's Health Insurance Program earlier this year and allowed states to cover all immigrant children and pregnant women, regardless of how long they've been in the country. In their letter, the Democrats said health care costs are much lower for legal immigrants than for native citizens. "Immigrants are part of our families, our communities, our economy, and contribute to the fabric of America," they wrote. "It is simply wrong that their taxes would pay for public health insurance programs to which they are not allowed access." Visitors seeking U.S. health care fret over work By Ramit Plushnick-Masti, Associated Press GIBSONIA, Pa. — A bright girl with dark curls crowning her face, Matisse Reid has been sick all her life with a rare disorder that prevents her body from absorbing nutrients. She nibbles on beet salad for lunch, but Matisse's real meal — fats, nutrients and fluids — come from an intravenous line running from her backpack to a vein in her stomach. After six years of IV feedings, the pressure on her liver is becoming life-threatening and she is running out of usable veins. Often, she is doubled over with chronic pain and vomiting. After months of fundraising in their native New Zealand, Wayne and Jodee Reid, Matisse's parents, packed up their family of six and traveled 8,500 miles to Pittsburgh for a multi-organ transplant that could save their 6-year-old daughter's life. As they wait for a stomach, bowel and pancreas to become available, the Reids must draw from $260,000 they raised, money they are counting on to carry them through the years it will take Matisse to recover from her operation. Like other foreign families in the United States to obtain lifesaving medical care, the Reids are here on tourist visas, which do not allow them to find jobs. Families say that makes it more difficult to sustain themselves on the long journey of saving their children's lives, adding to their anxiety. "At the end of the day, we're just parents trying to do what's best for their children," Jodee said as Matisse, who is often in pain, played upstairs in the home they rent in this Pittsburgh suburb. The Reids arrived in Pittsburgh in January, expecting to spend about three years here for Matisse's operation and long recovery. But with the wait for the transplants expecting to take eight months to a year, they now realize they may have to stay closer to five years — and it's unclear whether the money they raised will be enough. If they spend only $60,000 annually — a tight stretch for a family of six — the money will run out in about four years. Often, coming to the United States is the only choice for families seeking complicated transplants, leaving people who have always worked dependent on charitable people and organizations. On rare occasions, they are forced to return home. "There's no provision whatsoever, even for humanitarian grounds, to allow these people to work," said Bruce Larson, director of the international personnel office at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which treated about 8,000 foreigners last year at its hospitals, including several hundred children. The federal government does not track how many of the millions of people who come here on tourist visas are seeking medical care. Working with the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said he plans to sponsor a bill that would grant work permits to parents of children who need more than six months of medical care. But it could get hung up in the bitter debate over immigration reform. Cohen wants to attach his bill to the broader reform legislation, which collapsed in the Senate in June. "I should hope it would have support. It's logical, it's humane," Cohen said. "I can't imagine anyone thinking this would be a security risk. It's just a humanitarian issue." Matisse was born on Christmas Day 2000 with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a disorder in which the small or large intestines lose their ability to contract and push food, stool and air through the gastrointestinal tract. It affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States and is most common in children and the elderly. The cause is unknown but symptoms include severe bowel problems — from vomiting and diarrhea to chronic pain. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where Matisse is awaiting the triple transplant, treats fewer than 30 international patients a year. Years of lobbying convinced the New Zealand government to cover the $1.4 million cost of Matisse's planned transplants. Independently, the Reids also raised nearly $260,000 in donations to sustain Matisse and her three siblings — Rachel, 15, Kalani, 9 and Fraanz, 2 — during the years it will take Matisse to recover. "It's only the highly motivated or those with some resources to raise money to come to another country, whether it's England, France or the United States, can come," said Dr. George Mazariegos, director of pediatric transplants at Children's Hospital. "Right now the care is very disproportional to the need." Intestinal transplants have been done only about 1,300 times since 1989, nearly all in the United States, Mazariegos said. A study by a group of doctors in Columbus, Ohio, found that of eight children who underwent such transplants, two died a short while later. Cancer Health Disparities...?? All too often cancer’s burdens are far heavier on the “medically undeserved” people than the general population; the “medically undeserved” being: the poor, the uninsured, and ethnic minorities. Cancer health disparities, as the NCI defines them, are “differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of cancer and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific populations groups in the United States.” The NCI’s goal is to eliminate these disparities to allow the undeserved part of the population to reap the benefits of the huge amount of progress that has been made in the preventing, detecting, diagnosing, treating, etc. of cancer. They plan on reaching this goal by studying/identifying the issues that add to the disparities, and making partnerships and collaborations with organizations to address and solve them. Do you agree that the following are lies intended to stop health reform? Lie #1: President Obama and Congressional Democrats are seeking to “nationalize” health care, which will result in “socialized medicine.” The Truth: Fear-inducing buzzwords such as “nationalization” and “socialized medicine” are not accurate descriptions of Obama’s health care approach. In reality, Obama and Congressional Democrats are advocating that health care remain primarily in private hands, but that the government should design a "health insurance exchange" and “public option” to cover most of the estimated 46 million uninsured. In addition, Obama is promoting new regulations to reduce escalating health care costs, guarantee the portability of insurance policies, and limit the ability of insurance companies to deny coverage simply because of preexisting conditions. Lie #2: "Universal health care” is overly bureaucratic and results in a “government takeover” of health care. The Truth: The U.S. is the only country in the industrialized world that does not have some form of universal health care. But “universal” is not synonymous with a “government takeover.” Though some countries such as Great Britain and Canada have indeed nationalized major components of their health care systems, other countries such as Germany and the Netherlands have found ways in which to cover everyone while also retaining a strong private insurance system. In this regard, Obama and a majority of Congressional Democrats have endorsed a relatively moderate approach designed to reduce bureaucratic red tape in both private and public health care institutions. Under such a plan, no one will be compelled to switch from his or her insurance company to a public option. Lie #3: Health care reform will result in the rationing of care, thus depriving people of important medical services. The Truth: Insurance companies are actually the ones who are currently rationing health care in the U.S. Every day, countless thousands of Americans are denied payment for needed operations and treatments by health insurance companies. In contrast, there is nothing in any of the major Democratic proposals that would ration care. This is simply another scare tactic designed by conservative special interest groups to forestall any major reform of the system. Lie #4: Health care reform, as proposed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats, will supply illegal immigrants with health care coverage. The Truth: The main House bill, HR 3200, actually bans the coverage of illegal immigrants. According to Section 246 in the bill, any type of health insurance exchange or public option would forbid payments "on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States." Lie #5: Health care reform proposals endorsed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats will mandate “death panels” for elderly patients, thus encouraging euthanasia. The Truth: There is absolutely nothing in any of the bills before Congress that would provide for death panels or euthanasia. What HR 3200, Section 1233, actually states is that Medicare would be required to pay doctors for consultations with patients about "advance care planning," such as living wills, hospice care, etc. The American Medical Association, which has endorsed the Democratic approach to health care reform, has noted that such consultations would be strictly voluntary and not result in any type of rationing of care or euthanasia for seniors. Lie #6: Democratic proposals for health care reform include a provision that would allow the U.S. government to access patients’ bank accounts and related financial records. The Truth: Section 163 of HR 3200 entitled "Standards for financial and administrative transactions" requires the government to set "comprehensive, efficient and robust" rules for electronic transactions, thus reducing expensive and duplicative paperwork. This is one of several provisions that are designed to cut administrative costs and red tape in the health care bureaucracy. This provision only covers companies involved in medical billing and not individual patients. Lie #7: The U.S. cannot afford any new, expensive government programs that will fuel the deficit for years to come. The Truth: Currently, the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world. Every year, health care costs continue to rise, while insurance companies raise premiums and other out of pocket expenses for average consumers. Health care costs result in sixty percent of all bankruptcies in the US. One major reason why health care is so expensive is due to the approximately 46 million Americans who are uninsured that tend to visit emergency rooms for even minor ailments. As the most expensive place to receive care, ERs drive up the cost of health care in general. With universal health care, ER visits would almost certainly decline, thus saving huge sums of money. United... a new political party/policy? well, it's not so much a party as a way of thinking... you can still be a Republican or Democrat, and be in the United Party... I propose a group/way of thought where we put the major issues that the parties differ on behind us, at least long enough to work on the issues that we can ALL (for the most part) agree need to be adressed... Having private health care allows you to skip waiting lists and to receive treatment faster than those with public health care. A large amount of public healthcare is free or low cost, however it does not mean it is all free and waiting for treatment may be involved. It comes to the tradeoff of whether you want forced private healthcare with no waits, or if you prefer public healthcare. This almost ensures that Spain's residents all have healthcare, but not at the same cost and quality of treatment. Does this healthcare system appeal to you? 9. Why is it La Raza Demands Obama's Health Reform Plan Cover Illegal Aliens? On Monday, June 15, the National Council of La Raza (La Raza), an open borders advocacy group, issued a statement calling upon Congress to ensure that illegal aliens are given health benefits if and when Congress considers health care reform. La Raza's statement "strongly urge[d] President Obama and Congress to make every effort to ensure that health care reform reaches all communities" in the United States, and stressed that "one out of every three uninsured persons and roughly 40% of all uninsured children [in the United States] are Latino," and demanded "health care reform that makes coverage affordable and accessible for everyone — all families and all children." La Raza President and CEO Janet Murguía used the statement to emphasize that "everyone in the U.S. should contribute to a new health system," and that "Latinos [would] accept their responsibility" to contribute to a new health care system and "will pay their fair share for the health coverage they need." While the statement does not reference illegal immigration specifically, or distinguish between legal and illegal aliens, it does express concern that adding new, expensive verification and documentation procedures for immigrants would "severely restrict access to health care coverage." (La Raza Press Release, June 15, 2009). Specific research has shown that many illegal aliens lack health insurance and represent a disproportionate share of the United States' uninsured population. The Pew Hispanic Center's recent report, A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the United States, found that 59% of illegal aliens in the United States had no form of health insurance in 2007, and that 45% of illegal alien children were also without health coverage in 2007. It also found that even the U.S.-born children of illegal aliens were insured at the low rate of 25%, and that there was a significant disparity between the volume of uninsured illegal aliens and the volume of uninsured U.S. citizens and other legal residents. Why is it impossible for a Bipolar I diagnosed person to get health insurance? I am a 26 year old, fully functioning, working, female adult who just happens to have a Bipolar I diagnosis that I got at the age of 21 while still in college. It so happens that I was on my parents healthcare until the age of 23, and then was uninsured. I have had several high paying jobs with group benefits since then, but I recently quit the last one to return home to help an ailing family member with a family business. Because it is a company of under 6 people, there is no group insurance plan. I have money and am proud that I earn my own wages. I have NO problems paying ridiculous amounts for health insurance, provided that they will cover prescriptions and everything but co-pays. My current insurance plan is crap and will not cover any psychiatric treatment, will only cover regular medical expenses (broken arm, stitches, etc) after I've paid $500 out of my own pocket, and no prescriptions. I have applied (and been denied) for health insurance already from: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, United, and a couple of other major health insurance agencies. They all reject me immediately because of the Bipolar I diagnosis. I have appealed this rejection a few times because I have never been hospitalized as an inpatient, I have never hurt myself, etc. It seems very unfair to me that they randomly reject me without viewing my case file. My psychiatrist is even willing to write a letter on my behalf and I have had insurance agents personally appeal to underwriting, to no avail. I have had NO problems with my disorder since I've been medicated, which was December of 2003. Any suggestions here? I really need health insurance... at some point I'd like to have children, and nevermind the fact that I just want to be covered in case of emergency. Thanks! Some additional details: I *did* qualify for COBRA and paid it, the last payment they did not receive in the mail so they cancelled me. I appealed it several times and lost it. Which political group do I belong to the most? I know little about politics in America but there are certain ideals I believe in. I'll list my beliefs and you can direct me to the most valid political party. I feel that there should be a national health care plan for all Americans for free. I feel that less restrictions and more research should be done on stem cells and human cloning. I feel that church and state should be completely separated and all religious propaganda should be removed from US currency while removing "under God" from the pledge of allegiance (reverting it to its original form before being changed by a religious group). I feel that there should be no wars started by the United States without just cause and complete backing by the United Nations. There should be more focus on space exploration and colonization. There should be no more drilling for oil and the US should back research into alternative fuel sources like solar, electricity, and hydrogen instead of leaving the research up to the oil and auto companies (conflict of interests?). Also, Government already has to cover Medicare, Social Security, Government housing, the Federal Housing Committee, and the collapse of the Financial Institutions. To a lot of thoughtful people, the only way to fix the health insurance crisis in the United States is to get the federal government to cover everyone. In most states, individuals can be denied coverage for any number of reasons, so it is wise to request and compare more than one individual health insurance quote. The extra short-term effort that's required to apply for individual medical insurance plans is easily worth the long-term savings. If one is insuring ones family, as opposed to just oneself, there are some additional considerations to take into account. Even if one does receive coverage through an employer-sponsored health plan, one should consider the cost-saving benefits of switching to a family medical insurance policy or moving some of your family members off of your group policy into a family policy. Most Americans receive their health coverage through some type of group health insurance. Although large corporations with hundreds or even thousands of employees have the bargaining power to negotiate with medical insurance companies for custom health plans for their workers, the small business owner must still research options and compare prices from multiple providers. How can we learn if our insurance is part of AIG group? Seems AIG is a group of insurance companies all over the world. Is the US the only country bailing out AIG? They used the American name, but not an American company. As I see it. I think the American people are being made fools of. These banks we are bailing out are all over the world. Individual health insurance vs. group health insurance? I recently switch jobs and the company I will be working for offers a group health insurance plan that I feel is too expensive ($1035 per month for a family). I was thinking about purchasing a similar health plan from "United Healthcare" or "Aetna". I guess my question is, I originally thought group plans were suppose to be less expensive than purchasing a plan on your own. When I received a quote from "United Healthcare" it was between $350-450 per month. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The cut will take effect in the 2008-09 fiscal year and will result in a $3.8 million (approximately) reduction in state appropriations for Collin College. In his veto, Governor Perry stated that community colleges had falsified their appropriation requests submitted to the Legislative Budget Board. We absolutely take strong issue with this allegation. To date, no evidence supporting the Governor’s claim has been released. All 50 Texas community college presidents have united in making the Governor and the media aware that this action will be fiscally devastating to community college students and the economic future of Texas. " Bottom line: this means that my paycheck which currently has over $600 in deductions for insurance will now make it over $900 per month taken out of my paycheck... ...This means, that in the county I live in, the average household earns over $73,000. My hubby and I earn under $44,000, and barely make ends meet. I’m nearly 50 yrs old, and am of a very hard age for any future new employment. With this taking effect, my take home per month will be under $850 per month. My car payment (which is needed because it accommodates my hubbys wheelchair) is over $500 per month. Costa Mesa's illegal-immigration crackdown highlights the fears of many Activists worry that the city's enforcement of federal laws would affect more than just those guilty of serious crimes. By Jennifer Delson, Times Staff Writer January 30, 2007 In a city that has clashed loudly and publicly over immigration laws, the arrest of Marcelino Tzir Tzul underscored the worst fears in Costa Mesa's Latino community. The 37-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala was picked up for riding his bicycle on the wrong side of the street, brought before a federal agent at the city jail and then shipped to a federal lockup to await his likely deportation. For months, Latino activists had worried that Costa Mesa's decision to become one of the nation's first cities to enforce federal immigration laws would result in people such as Tzir being swept off the streets. "This is exactly what we feared," said Amin David, who heads Los Amigos of Orange County, a Latino advocacy group. But others, including the mayor of Costa Mesa, applaud the crackdown, even if it means that people who have committed minor crimes are caught in the process. "I believe illegal immigration is wrong. It's breaking the law," said Mayor Allan Mansoor, an Orange County sheriff's deputy. During a three-week period in December, 46 Latino men picked up in Costa Mesa were taken to the Mira Loma Detention Center in Lancaster to await deportation hearings. Half were held on misdemeanor charges. Tzir, who came to this country illegally in 2005, was headed to work on a chilly January morning when his luck ran out. A religious man who kept a Bible by his bed and three cheap suits in a closet for nightly church services, Tzir had come to Costa Mesa to send money home to his wife and three children. Wearing work boots and a blue sweatshirt stained from the previous day's work, Tzir rode his blue mountain bike down Placentia Avenue, through the heart of the town's Latino community. When he turned left on Hamilton Street, an officer stopped him and told him he was riding on the wrong side of the road. He also didn't have a bicycle license. Without an ID, Tzir was taken to the city jail, where a federal agent recently assigned to the city determined he was in the country illegally. Before he could alert family or friends, he was shipped to the lockup in Lancaster to await a deportation hearing. "The sin I committed was to enter this country illegally," Tzir said in a recent jailhouse interview in Spanish. "I regret the pain I have caused my family, but I will leave with my head held high because I know that all I did here was to work hard." Although Tzir's crime was minor, many of those swept up in Costa Mesa in December were arrested on serious charges. Of 20 arrest records the city was able to provide, most involved men in their mid-20s charged with crimes such as selling drugs and burglary. One involved a 19-year-old accused of having sex with a minor. Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said one man had an arrest record in five states and had been deported three times. Another had drug convictions and had been deported five times, she said. Wendy Leece, who was recently elected to the City Council, said having the agent in the jail would make the community a safer place. "There are a broad spectrum of crimes being committed," Leece said. "Maybe some are misdemeanors, but they are lawbreakers." By the time Tzir was able to call his wife, news of the ongoing crackdown had drifted through the city's immigrant community. Rumors about immigration raids and tips on avoiding the police spread. "Do the police want to pluck people off the streets like him when there are so many people who commit real crimes?" wondered the Rev. Oscar A. Ramirez of Iglesia Fuente de Amor (Fountain of Love Church) in Costa Mesa, where Tzir taught Bible classes. Others in Costa Mesa — where the immigration debate has colored local elections, drawn the attention of groups such as the Minuteman Project and become the fodder of national talk radio — see no shame in someone such as Tzir being picked up and ultimately deported. "The law is the law, and we need to enforce it, not here and there. They are all criminals the minute they step across the border," said Jason Mrochek, director of the Federal Immigration Reform & Enforcement Coalition, which runs anti-illegal-immigrant protests throughout Southern California. Tzir said he felt reluctant to sneak into the United States and did so only because of a pressing need for money. In Guatemala, he was a nurse in a rural health center outside Quiriguá, a small town best known for its Mayan ruins, where he dispensed prescription medicines, helped deliver babies and tended to the injured. He earned a college degree in health and studied the Bible so he could become a minister. When his employer cut his salary from $782 to $339 a month, he and his wife feared the money wouldn't be enough to make ends meet. "I felt all the doors closed to me, and I needed quick relief," Tzir said. Tzir's wife called a relative in Costa Mesa for help. The relative, who worked as a nanny in an Orange County home and declined to be identified because she also is in the country illegally, said she decided to pay a smuggler $14,000, which she had saved, to bring Tzir, as well as her own son, to Costa Mesa. When he arrived in Costa Mesa, Tzir said he found work quickly, pulling in about $400 a week. "He was motivated by the opportunities in this country," said roommate Marcos Roa, 53, a waiter in a Costa Mesa restaurant. "He dreamed of bringing his wife and children here." At first he lived with a relative but later moved into an aging apartment complex on Hamilton Avenue, where he paid $225 a month to share a bedroom. He cooked his own food, read the Bible and books on the English language, and spent four nights a week at the Iglesia Fuente de Amor, an Assemblies of God church, where once a week he taught Bible classes. Rudy Sandoval, a fellow Guatemalan who hired Tzir to install hardwood floors, said they spent much of their free time talking about the Bible and their faith. "He was serious. No liquor. No smoking. No women," said Sandoval's wife, Elma. "Not even a curse word." The night before he was picked up by police, Sandoval said, Tzir talked about how much he missed his family, saying, "What am I doing here? I've got to go home." Costa Mesa Police Chief Christopher Shawkey, a former Phoenix police commander recently named to the city's top police post, said his department was simply enforcing the law as it always had. "No dictate has been issued …. We're not going to change our enforcement policies because of this," Shawkey said. "We need to remain consistent." Shawkey said he called the Orange County Human Relations Commission to determine how to alleviate fears about the federal agent, but no decisions have been made. "I would hope that the community would still have trust in the Police Department," Shawkey said. For local Enriqueta Monterroso, who said she entered the United States illegally eight years ago, the crackdown has awakened memories. "I feel like I did in my last days in Guatemala when we thought the army would arrest us for any little thing," she said. Tzir, who is expected to remain jailed until his likely Feb. 13 deportation date, said he realized it was wrong to sneak into the United States. But, he said, the issue was far more complex than that. "There is no question that I broke the law," Tzir said. "But it's very clear that immigrants are the motor of the most powerful economy in the world. Immigrants have a value. They do what Americans will not do."

Universal health care? Let's look at this for what it is... Baby boomers. When they were young, credit card interest was tax deductable. This changed because too many of them were taking advantage of it. Prior to this, it was taboo to use credit except for homes and perhaps automobiles. They have proliferated on having a large voting voice of common interests, driving up CEO salaries, etc... A college degree used to guarantee a very good salary, but sadly not these days. Now you need an MBA. This seems as if it was another way of keeping the baby-boom generation in the high-end jobs. Now that the baby-boomers are nearing retirement, is it just one more thing they are all going to jump aboard? As they age, their medical costs are going to sky rocket, and they don't want to pay for it. Do they want you, the next generation, to pay for it? some pro McCanns have said that how could a mother kill her child? Well !!! This is an piece taken from an article by a journalist Lisa Lascody called When Moms Attack. I was shocked and horrified while watching the news coverage recently about the woman in Texas who beat her children to death with rocks. This is not the first time I have heard about a mother killing her kids, in fact, there seems to quite a few of these cases in the news lately. I remember the high profile cases of Susan Smith and Andrea Yates as well as a few others that did not garner as much media attention. While doing some research for this article, there was another horrible child murder. A young couple in Texas strangled and then decapitated their three young children. I began to wonder how many killer moms were out there. So, after a bit of online research and remedial statistical analysis, I found the surprising answer. It is called "maternal filicide" which is a fancy way of saying child murderer and it happens over 600 times each year. That number seemed ridiculously high to me so I doubled checked with the Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics and the FBI Crime statistics. They verified that mothers kill their own kids over 600 times per year! That puts a pretty frightening face on the group calling itself the "Million Mom March". I wonder how many of those mothers are ticking time bombs? What sets them off and how can we protect their children? I know of at least one of those anti-gun moms who committed murder. She even spoke out against gun violence at the first Million Mom March in Washington, D.C. Then, a few months later, she shot and killed a boy. Now, she didn't kill her own child, but she did murder the boy she thought had shot her son. It turned out she got the wrong guy and shot an innocent person. What that group needed to be pushing was self control not gun control. Perhaps, after reading the rest of this article, they will see the dangers within their own group and switch their efforts to mother control. Gun control groups love to use the phony statistic of "13 kids per day die from firearms each year". Most of you reading this article know that number includes suicides, accidents and homicides. It also includes children up to 19 years old as well as crime-related deaths. So, if a police officer shoots and kills a 17-year-old armed robber that is counted as one of the "13 kids per day". I decided to do a little comparison between the number of kids killed by their mothers and the number of children killed with a firearm. I only used kids under the age of 5 for this comparison because they had their own special statistical category called infanticide. Plus, not too many kids under 5 are in gangs or committing suicide so the results would not be skewed. Children under the age of 5 in the United States are more likely to be killed by their parents than by anyone else. FBI crime stats show that in 1999 parents were responsible for 57% of these murders. Even though women commit less than 13% of all violent crime, they are responsible for about 50% of all parental murders. These killer moms almost never use a gun to kill their kids. They prefer a more hands-on approach like beating, drowning, shaking, strangling or suffocation. Others will resort to poisoning, stabbing or exposure to the elements. Less than 20% of the cases involved a parent shooting their child to death. (US Dept. of Justice Study, 1988) In 1999, there were 613 homicides of children under the age of 5. Of these homicides, only 73 were killed with a firearm while 351were killed by a parent! Of the 73 children killed with a firearm, about 20% of those were committed by one of the parents. So, that brings down the number down from 73 to 59. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1999) That is 351 cases of parents murdering their kids compared to 59 firearm-related homicides in one year. To be fair, I have been mainly discussing mothers. Since around half of all the parental murderers are mothers, that number is about 175. Still, those numbers are staggering. The numbers seem to indicate that kids have much more to fear from their own mothers than from most gun owners. In fact, legal gun owners are only responsible for less than one percent of all crimes. I am not anti-mother and I don't want to ban motherhood, but I do support reasonable mom-control laws like background checks, licensing & registration, waiting periods and a limit on the number of children one mother can raise. After all, isn't it worth it if it saves just one child?

Commercial weight loss diets are all similarly effective at 6 months, and those with support are more effective at 12 months, according to the results of the randomized BBC "diet trials" reported in the June 3 issue of the BMJ. Participants in these trials were filmed as part of a BBC television series. "Most adults in the United States diet at some time, and trends in the United Kingdom are similar," write Helen Truby, MD, from the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, and colleagues. "Long term success rates are poor, with 50% of weight loss being regained within one year. Although commercial diets provide consumers with a plethora of choice, data on their comparative efficacy are limited." Using a community-based sample of otherwise healthy overweight and obese adults, this 6-month, multicenter, unblended controlled trial compared 4 popular commercial weight loss programs with a control group. These diets were the Slim-Fast plan (a meal replacement approach), Weight Watchers pure points program (an energy-controlled diet with weekly group meetings), Dr Atkins' new diet revolution (a self-monitored low carbohydrate eating plan), and Rosemary Conley's eat-yourself-slim diet and fitness plan (a low-fat diet and a weekly group exercise class). Primary endpoints were changes in weight and body fat during 6 months. Compared with the control group, all diets were associated with a significant loss of body fat and weight during 6 months, but outcomes in the 4 diet groups did not differ significantly from each other. Intent-to-treat analysis revealed that average weight loss was 5.9 kg, and average fat loss was 4.4 kg during 6 months. Although the Atkins diet resulted in significantly higher weight loss during the first 4 weeks, it was no more or less effective than the other diets by the end of the study. At 12 months, 158 participants (54% of the original sample) returned data, and only 58 (45%) were still compliant with their assigned diets (9 to Atkins, 20 to Weight Watchers, 9 to Slim-Fast, 20 to Rosemary Conley). More participants in the unsupported programs (Atkins diet and Slim-Fast) withdrew than in the supported programs (P = .04), and weight rebound after the initial 6 months was higher in the unsupported programs. All diets resulted in a clinically useful weight loss of around 10% after 12 months in participants who had kept to their original diet. "Clinically useful weight loss and fat loss can be achieved in adults who are motivated to follow commercial diets for a substantial period," the authors write. "Given the limited resources for weight management in the NHS [National Health System], healthcare practitioners should discuss with their patients programmes known to be effective." Study limitations include varied compliance with each diet, small number of participants, and effect of media interest on motivation to meet goal weights and patients' expectations of weight loss. One of the authors has disclosed receiving consulting fees for serving on the scientific advisory panel of Slimming World. In an accompanying editorial, David Arterburn, MD, MPH, from the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, Wash, notes the high costs of some commercial diets and the low rate of ongoing compliance with the assigned diets at 1 year. "The challenge to researchers in obesity is to take weight loss studies, especially those involving commercial programmes and private funding, to the next level," Dr Arterburn writes. "'Diet Trials II' would serve us best by evaluating long term health outcomes, cost effectiveness, and novel strategies of improving adherence and weight maintenance. Such strategies might include economic incentives for participants and researchers collaborating with employers and healthcare providers."

Use the Internet and your phone to contact everyone you know and tell them to do NOTHING at these places of business. This won’t be a one-day boycott not to buy gasoline. This will last until gas prices come down. Don’t buy gas there. Don’t stop there for a pack of cigarettes or a loaf of bread. DON’T GO THERE FOR ANYTHING for AS LONG AS IT TAKES to get gas prices down. PROBLEM: Frivolous government spending. DEMAND: The public wants it stopped. PUBLIC SOLUTION: Email, call, or write your State Representative, Senator, and Congressman and tell them to start cutting their budget, PERIOD. Give them a time frame and demand a WEEKLY progress report. Demand they cut their government salaries in half. Demand they give up their health care benefits that are paid for by the public, policies the public can’t afford for them selves. Demand a 25% cut in their total budget within 90 days. Don’t stop sending emails, making calls, or writing letters until the budget is reduced and if you don’t see results, demand the politician to abdicate them self from their position. Don’t be afraid to rebel! Support and elect a candidate that will close the door to special interest groups and take an active part with you in dismantling a government that serves itself instead of the people.

Victims are convinced with false promises of a good job and a better way of living, and then forced to work under abusive and inhuman conditions. Victims of trafficking are brought into the system through several means. Most victims of trafficking today come from three populations. First, parents may sell children to traffickers in order to pay off debts or gain income. Second, runaways or other displaced persons may be picked up by traffickers. Third, people who are seeking entry to other countries may be picked up by traffickers, and typically are misled into thinking that they will be free after being smuggled across the border. Definitions may very base upon that cultural variation of the crime. In the United States, when people think of human trafficking, they often refer to the illegal practice of migrant smuggling. They picture illegal immigrants from countries like Mexico or China arriving into the United States by way of freight trailer or cargo boat in search for job opportunities and freedom. Human trafficking is defined as sex trafficking in which commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or in which the person forced to perform such an act is under 18. The recruitment, transportation, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force or fraud, for the purpose of subjecting that person to involuntary hard labor, high debts owed, or slavery. Men, women, and children worldwide were bought, sold, transported, and held against their will in unsafe and abusive conditions. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing forms of commerce and crime throughout the world. While men, women, and children are trafficked throughout many countries into forced labor situations in sweatshops and agricultural sites, the majority of victims are women and children trafficking into the sex trade for the purpose of prostitution, sex tourism, pornography and other sexual services. The International Organization for Migrations (IOM) estimate the rate could be much higher, stating that as many as two million men, women and children were trafficking across borders in 2001 (IOM website, 2003). Illegal aliens look for the help of “traffickers” to be transporter into another country, mainly the United States. Traffickers, work in small, large, or highly organized groups, arranging for everything from transportation to fake identification, visas, passports and work documents for the aliens. While the conditions of transportation may be unknown, “smuggled” aliens knowingly and willingly enter the destination country to work or find work, they agree to being smuggled. However, a smuggling relationship may allow the opportunity for the smuggler to alter the relationship to trafficking. Persons who seek the help of smugglers often become victims of trafficking, in the destination country or en route. When victims have never consented to being smuggled are either kidnapped or deceived with false employment offers. Traffickers make a profit between seven billion and ten billion dollars a year globally, and it is know as the third largest source of illicit trade, behind guns and narcotics. According to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, the intelligence community predicts that revenue from trafficking “will outstrip the illicit trade in guns and narcotics within a decade.” (Chauang, J., 2006). History Early trafficking efforts focused on white slavery. In 1904, the International Agreement for the Suppression of the White Slave Traffic was created, although very few countries signed it. In the following decades, the focus on trafficking continued to be on women and children who were sold into prostitution. The first concerted international effort to combat trafficking came in 1949, with the U.N. Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. Like other such conventions before it, the document focused on the trafficking of women and children for prostitution. The U.S. at the same time was undertaking its own efforts to combat global human trafficking. In 2000, Congress passed the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (also referred to as the Trafficking Victims Protection Act), the first U.S. law to comprehensively address the various aspects of human trafficking. The act included measures to help those who were trafficked and to increase punishment for traffickers, as well as to bolster other countries' efforts against trafficking. President Bill Clinton (D, 1993-2000) signed the act in October 2000, hailing it as "the most significant step we've ever taken to secure the health and safety of women at home and around the world." With regard to dealing with those who have been trafficked, the law represented a turnaround in policy. Previously, those found working illicitly were treated as criminals. The 2000 act changed that, treating those people as victims of a crime and seeking to help rather than punish them. Under the act, victims can be given a special visa, called a T-visa, allowing them to stay in the U.S. for up to three years if they would face hardship upon deportation. In return, the victims agree to assist in the investigation and prosecution of the traffickers. (As of March 2004, 448 victims of trafficking had been granted a T-visa.) The U.S. has also cracked down on Americans who may contribute to trafficking abroad. For example, Congress has passed legislation under which Americans who travel overseas to frequent child prostitutes, known as "sex tourism," can be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. And the Defense Department has also established a "zero tolerance" policy toward U.S. servicemen who may contribute to human trafficking overseas. In addition, individual states have also begun to pass human trafficking legislation. Texas and Washington State were the first two states to pass such legislation, and Arizona and California are considering similar legislation.
