- Carbohydrates are your body's preferred source of fuel for everything, including exercise. Your muscles and your liver store glycogen which when needed, is released into the bloodstream as glucose. If you do not provide the necessary carbohydrates your body needs, it only has two sources to turn to protein and fat. Since your body needs carbohydrates, your body will begin to deteriorate. Your diet has to be composed mostly of carbohydrates. You cannot be an athlete and live off a no-carb diet. It will not work.
