What do mental-health experts think of Dr. Phil? (link here) http://www.cobizmag.com/articles.asp?id=1972?

I have become increasingly concerned with TV health experts, particularly in the field of mental health, putting entertainment and viewer ratings ahead of sound medical practice and advice. Dr. Phil's near-decision to air Britney Spears' troubles was the most recent and most egregious example of this. http://www.cobizmag.com/articles.asp?id=1972.

  2. Dr phil is merely a talking head that was created by okra winpee.I wouldnt let him asses the mental stability of a freakin parakeet.
  3. Once he decided to take it upon himself and give her counsel, he ASSUMED the role of physician/caregiver. He said he went in as a "friend" of the family.......hogwash. He knew exactly what he was called in there to do. Therefore he should have been bound by patient/client privilege and HIPPA. He has in my mind destroyed the last shreds of credibility to his name.
  4. He gives very sensational and bad advice to people. As someone with an undergrad degree in psychology, I am shocked at some of the advice he gives people, and the misinformation about treatment effectiveness and options. We studied one of his shows in a childhood psychopathology class last year, and I was amazed at what he was telling people. I counted at least 10 instances of bad medical information (not just bad advice, I mean factually incorrect information). He might be good entertainment, but he is not a good psychologist in my opinion.
