Mend Your Diet

Detox Diet?

My co-workers are going on a detox diet where they are eating only fruits and veggies for three days...then regular dieting for two, so on and so forth. No meat at all and drinking water/pure veggie or fruit juice. Is this safe?? I'm thinking about going on it with them cause I certainly could lose some weight...I'm just not sure how I feel about shocking my body like that! Please let me know your opinions/experiences with detox diet or any diet that may have worked for you! Thanks! :-)

  1. Yes it is safe for that length of time. However, i would not consider cutting protein out for long periods of time. It is true that red meat is not good for you, but eating healthy proteins like egg whites, chicken, turkey, soy, and nuts is a good way to give your body what it needs.
  2. The Dr. That Oprah always has on said that detox diets do nothing.
  3. I agree with Lolly. Nothing too drastic and you should be okay. Rules of thumb (and I am sure there are many who would disagree with me, but you can feel free to consult your doc...) 1. Everything in moderation, dieters do not succeed...those who change their habits for the better over extended periods of time do 2. Diets that cut out any part of the food pyramid for any substantial length of time are not good for you (your body needs carbs, proteins, good sugars, etc...again, in moderation) Obviously, cutting back on the not so good for you foods like chocolate cake are good choices. 3. Exercise is the key ingredient to any form of weight loss you want to do, besides the fact it will help reduce stress and boost your energy...not over night, but if done for the long term as with changing eating habits With that said, eating fruits and veggies for a few days is not going to hurt you, if anything, you will feel very refreshed afterwrads. The key will be not to binge after those few days. Lots of water is always good, nevermind the fact you get a 'full' feeling after drinking it. (Also should mention, your water consumption should be just that, plain old water, not flavored or carbonated). Also, I remember my from my grandmother's doctor when she had to lose a lot of weight because of her heart years ago, and it was just reaffirmed last year when I questioned my own doctor about it...if you are going to diet, and you feel fatigued, very weak...almost like you are going to pass out, not only do you stop the diet, but consume a can of pineapple, juice and all...it will give you the sugar boost you need until you can prepare some "real" food. Whatever plan or diet you choose, regardless of what it tells you, give yourself at least one day a week you can, in moderation, eat freely...this will curb any urges to binge and you won't be depriving yourself. Good luck with your weight loss.
  4. Dieting tips Many people find that eating a couple of small snacks throughout the day helps them to make healthy choices at meals. A fattening breakfastof bacon and eggs or a pastry can be replaced with yogurt, oatmeal, high-fiber,low-sugar cereals; or fresh fruit or fruit smoothies. Look for healthy, delicious meals online or in your cookbooks, and create amenu for the week. Make sure that your meal plan reduces your totalcalorie intake: you're not going to lose weight if you consume thesame amount of calories by eating different foods. Make a list ofwhat you'll need for these meals, and -- except for a few snacks,of course -- don't stray from your list when you get to the market.
