- Eh, I'll bite. what is your health problem? Celiac Disease. how has you health problem affected you day-to-day life, and how has you life changed after being diagnosed? Celiac Disease is an intolerance to the gluten protein, which is found in wheat, barely, rye, oats, and many other common grains. When I eat that stuff, my immune system goes all crazy town and starts to attack my intestines. As a result, I cannot absorb nutrients from food very well and end up with deficiencies and weight loss. The only treatment for Celiac disease is adhering to a gluten-free diet forever. 1 out of 133 Americans have Celiac disease, although most are not aware of the fact, since the symptoms can be misleading and receiving a wrong diagnosis is common. Being diagnosed with this disease made a huge difference in my life - for the better. Now that I know what the problem is and what to avoid, I feel better now than I did for most of my life. Unfortunately, I do not eat out a restaurants very often any more because of the risk of cross-contamination. Cooking gluten-free is a challenge, but I'm learning as I go. Educating my family about the disease has proved almost the most difficult part of the whole process, because my sister still thinks of it like a minor food allergy, rather than an immuno-disease. Eating over at friends' houses and during family holidays is difficult. I usually tell people not to worry about me and I eat before I get there. how long have you had you health problem? My entire life, although nobody knew for 21 years. how old are you? 26 is your health problem genetic? They don't know. There seems to be a genetic component to the disease in that it runs in families, but it can appear in individuals with no family history of the disease. is you health problem a result of some thing else? Nope. do you have any advise for preventing others getting your health problem. There's no way to prevent this disease. The only advice I can offer is for people to get tested for it if they're having unexplained gastro-problems. Most people are diagnosed with IBS, which is a catch-all diagnosis that doesn't mean much of anything. Fortunately, there's been more publicity on Celiac disease in the past couple of years and food producers and restaurants are becoming more amiable to letting consumers know which of their products are safe for celiac sufferers. which country are you from? USA do you have to pay extra money for health care? No, there's nothing to take for this disease and my current employer offers good insurance. is you health problem mental or physical? Physical. what is the worst thing about your health problem? No beer. ;p any more things you would like to say? Good luck on your project!
