lose weight?
I'm a 12 year old girl, going into 7th grade and I'm about 5' 1" and 120 pounds. I'm not muscular or anything. My dad has diabetes type 2 so if I don't lose weight I might get it too. I hardly get excercise but the thing is I hardly watch tv, maybe a few times a week. I have wii at home so if I do that will I lose weight? And for example, if someone gave me a chocolate covered donut or a brownie I wouldn't eat it, b/c I hate things that are extremely sweet. Oh, and should I be a vegetarian? I'm not like obssesed with weight loss like some girls in my grade; I just want to lose weight for my health. I don't mind if I do it gradually. I want to lose weight safely. Thanks so much!

- you don't have to be athletic, but you do need to get up and do something ESPECIALLY if you are worried about diabetes ... try some of these ideas: no food after 7, a 30 minute walk after dinner - get an ipod and check out new music while you walk ... after dinner is better than in the morning b/c your body is still fasting in the morning (which teaches your body to conserve/retain calories) and it will give your metabolism a boost in the evening when it would otherwise be slowing down... cut out sugar, reduce cheese and refined carbs, and divide you daily calories between 5-6 meals ... never eat more than 500 calories at once ... your digestive system and metabolism will slow down ... drink TONS of water ... try to fill up on water before meals, try 4-8 oz of water when you "think" you are hungry before you eat anything ... eat high water foods like whole fruits and soups ... al dente pasta and rice are the worst since they suck the water out of your system and bloat you even after you are done eating (they swell up to 3 times their original-eaten-size in your stomach!!) ... put your fork down and have a drink of water or engage in conversation between bites (this gives your stomach time to tell your brain it is full) ... adding protein and lean body mass will increase your resting metabolic rate ... hope this helps!
- Lina, you are definitely not fat but I understand you wanting to be healthy to avoid problems later. You should not become a vegetarian because you are still growing and you need to have a well rounded diet that provides all the nutrients that you need. If you want to lose just a few pounds make sure that you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and avoid sugary juices and sodas, even the diet ones because they are gassy and still make you bloat. Make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink 2-4 glasses of milk (1% is ideal) a day. Don't ever skip meals, especially breakfast. I find it best to have 4 to 5 small meals a day. For example, at breakfast you can try 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal mixed with fresh berries and milk. At lunch you can have a glass of milk with an open faced turkey and cucumber sandwich with a piece of fruit. Always watch your portions. A serving of meat is no larger than a deck of cards and a serving of rice or pasta is one hand cupped. Try to get some physical activity (at least 30 minutes) every day doing activities that you like - walking, Pilates, volleyball - whatever. You might even want to check out some exercise videos to vary things a bit. I am a stay at home mom and I use a variety of different videos and in combination with a sensible diet I have lost 25 pounds in 3 months. I don't breastfeed so that is not the reason for my weight loss. So I know this stuff works. But first make sure to see your doctor so that he or she can first check you and help you figure out how much food and activity is right for you. Good luck!
